While the majority of meeting planners attending the recent Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International`s (HSMAI) Affordable Meetings(r) Mid-America show came from the Midwest, they are arranging meetings of all sizes and shapes and in all areas of the U.S. as well as international destinations, according to a post-show demographic report of the 1,049 qualified meeting planners who attended.

The majority of those who participated at Affordable Meetings(r) Mid-America came from the Midwest and more than half (58%) from Illinois, but when asked where they plan events, attendees indicated they arrange and hold meetings throughout the country, as well as 23% plan meetings outside the U.S., both of which relay the point that planners aren`t just arranging meetings in their home areas.

All three HSMAI Affordable Meetings(r) shows, in Washington, D.C., Long Beach, CA and Chicago, draw meeting planners who arrange and produce meetings, conventions and other events that may take place anywhere in the world, said Beth Petersen, show manager. These planners are looking to meet with and eventually sign contracts with destinations, hotels and conference centers from the Caribbean, Europe and even Asia, Petersen added.

With 36% of the delegates indicating they organize more than 12 events annually, the type of programs planned most often includes board/committee meetings (66%), with seminars and special events both at the 65% level. Training programs followed closely with 61% and half of all respondents (50%) indicated they plan conventions. Show participants expressed they produce programs of all types and sizes, from small meetings for groups under 100 people to large special events for more than 2,500 delegates.

While total attendance at HSMAI`s Affordable Meetings(r) Mid-America was largely based on planners from corporations (31%) and associations (21%), independent planners accounted for 17% of the mix, with individuals from the non-profit sector making up 10%.

Taking advantage of the convenient and easy-to-follow registration process, 88% of the meeting planners who attended HSMAI`s Affordable Meetings (Mid-America program) registered online.

Other shows for 2006 include: HSMAI`s Affordable Meetings(r) West, June 14 – 15, 2006 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, CA, and HSMAI`s Affordable Meetings(r) National, Sept. 6 – 7, 2006 at the Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C.
