When it comes to the Great British Summer Holiday, we’ve a long history of spending time on the continent. So much so that many of us have become somewhat disenchanted with certain destinations in mainland Europe. Combine that with the poor rate on the Euro we Brits have been experiencing in recent years along with the reduction in the cost of long haul travel has meant that 2 weeks in Spain is no longer the preferred option.
But a holiday in Europe is still a fantastic option, whether you’re looking for sun, sea and sand, a fun-filled family holiday or a romantic break. Here are 5 reasons you should definitely move Europe back to the top of your choice of holiday destinations.
1 – The Euro is bouncing back. Ok, so we’re not back in the headed realms of 1.6 Euros to the Pound we were seeing 10 years ago, but sterling is definitely strengthening against the Euro again. Plus, there are some great currency deals to be had if you know where to look, the decline of foreign travel in general this summer has meant, like the high street, foreign exchange companies are pulling out all the stops to get your business.
2 – Ultimate peace and quiet. With all eyes focussed on Britain and particularly London in the coming weeks, now’s a great time to get away from it all. Avoid heavily congested airports and hop on a ferry or the Eurostar. Pick your dates wisely and you’ll be heading out as everyone else is travelling in the opposite direction.
3 – Variety is the spice of life. Stop thinking of European countries and distinct and separate and open your mind up to the idea of touring. The Americans have been doing the summer tour in Europe for decades. With excellent transport links and without the worry of lots of different currencies, spend your time hopping from city to beach to mountains to countryside.
4 – The world’s best restaurant where you can always get a table. Now, this is personal opinion, but I believe that Europe has some of the finest food and wine the world has to offer. Grab gelato in Italy, host and cheese and wine night in France, tip toe through tapas bars in Spain and toast everyone’s good health with a beer or two in Germany.
5 – A warm welcome. With many European countries badly affected by the worldwide economic crisis, numbers of foreign visitors to places like Spain, Portugal and Greece are massively down. Not only does this means great deals for you but it also means you’ll be received with open arms when you arrive.
