The Island of Chios
Chios is the fifth largest of the Greek islands, situated in the Aegean Sea, 7 kilometres off the Turkish coast. The island is separated from Turkey by the Chios Strait. Chios is well known for the unique mastic gum, a resin obtained from the mastic tree. The tourist attractions of the island include its medieval villages, and the 11th-century monastery of “Nea Moni”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chios has several beaches, such as Vroulidia Beach, Glari Beach, Mavros Gialos, Nagos, Giossonas, Daskalopetra, and Megas Limnionas. Overall, the atmosphere of Chios is consists of Medieval mastic villages, beautiful beaches, old mansions with stone pebbled courtyards, village castles perched on rocks, museums and Byzantine monuments.
Two words for Cesme
The Çeşme Peninsula, due west of İzmir, and its towns of Çeşme, Alaçatı and Ilıca, is a major regional holiday destination. Cesme, which means Fountain or spring, lies on the extreme western tip of Turkey, opposite the Greek island of Chios. The Old city is full of Greek neo-classical buildings from the late 1800s/early 1900s that wouldn't be out of place in, say, Symi, which are well preserved and are quite elegant.
