Presentation of the new edition of the MedCruise Statistics

MedCruise President Stavros Hatzakos presented during Cruise Shipping Miami the new edition of the MedCruise Statistical Report.

MedCruise presented on Wednesday, March 12th, 2014, the 5th edition of the MedCruise Statistical Report entitled “Cruise activities in MedCruise Ports: Statistics 2013”. The presentation took place at the MedCruise booth at “Cruise Shipping Miami 2014” and was followed by a welcome reception open to visitors of the event.

MedCruise President Stavros Hatzakos noted that this report, which was produced by the MedCruise Secretariat, forms a useful reference tool not only for MedCruise members but also for the entire cruise industry, by providing a statistical analysis of cruise activities in the Mediterranean region and its adjoining seas for 2013, comparing the data with the immediate previous year and presenting an analysis of developments in the region during the last five years.

The latter, is based on the annual cruise traffic data of 67 MedCruise ports representing over 78% of the total cruise passenger movements in Mediterranean in 2013.

The 27 million cruise passenger movements that were registered in the MedCruise port members in 2013 present a variation of +4,22% over the previous year and +23,71% comparing to five years before (2009-2013).

Presenting the content of the report, MedCruise President was joined by Thanos Pallis, the secretary general of the Association, who explained that following a continuous growth per annum, that had reached double digit percentages in 2010 and 2011, the number of cruise passengers in the sampled ports declined by 3,57% in 2012, only to reach its highest level in 2013 reconfirming that the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas is a most dynamic region having all the potential to growth further.

As for the evolution of the number of cruise calls in the Med and its adjoining seas, MedCruise President stated that in 2013 it reached a total of 14.428, which represents a +3,78% growth comparing to the year before. Stavros Hatzakos explained also that cruise calls per year exceeded 14.000 for the first time in 2010, and reached a record high of 14.726 in 2011, while a decline by 5,59% took place in 2012. Thus, in 2013, with 525 more calls comparing to 2012, the growth of cruise calls in the Mediterranean region is reconfirmed.
