ARC finds varied seat capacity across small market airports

The purpose of the study was to determine if capacity in these markets has grown, declined or remained constant, and what factors might be contributing to these findings.

Overview
Airlines Reporting Corporation performed a data analysis of the available seat capacity at airports serving small markets within the United States. A comparison was made between the first quarter of 2013 vs. the same period in 2014. The purpose of the study was to determine if capacity in these markets has grown, declined or remained constant, and what factors might be contributing to these findings.

Methodology
By referencing Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) airport classifications, ARC focused on 411 airports that had at least 2,500 passenger boardings annually, with noone airport accounting for more than 0.25% of total annual passenger boardings in the U.S. Airports included those designated by the FAA as “Small Hub,” “Non-Hub Primary” and “Non-Primary Commercial Service.” Available seats were calculated by summing the seat capacity listed on the schedule for each flight departing or arriving at a given airport. Forty-four different air carriers operated the flights.

Findings
During the periods researched, seat capacity increased by 6.8% for the small market airports as a whole. This growth was mainly driven by an average 12.3% increase in available seats at Small Hub Airports (the largest of the small market airports). Change in capacity was slightly up at Non-Hub Airports averaging 6.1%, while Non-Primary Airports saw an average drop of -5.4%.
