Eight things to do in Louisville

Tips about a trip in Louisville.

If you are planning a trip to Louisville, you won't be short of attractions to pencil into your itinerary. Start by choosing the perfect hotel for your stay. The 21C Museum Hotel is a good choice if you want a culture fix, although if you are heading to the Kentucky Derby, check out the official host, the Galt House Hotel. Settle in, then make sure that you tick off these eight items from your Louisville bucket list.

Walk across the Big Four Pedestrian Bridge

Take a walk from Louisville's stunning Waterfront Park across the Big Four Pedestrian Bridge into Historic Downtown Jeffersonville in Indiana. Get a bite to eat at the Olive Leaf Bistro, check out the Purple Pig Gallery, or simply savor the sights and sounds of Spring Street.

Enjoy dinner on the belle of Louisville

A trip along the Ohio River on the country's oldest operating steam boat is a must if you are in Louisville. Board at Waterfront Park for a memorable sightseeing trip, or for added excitement, book a joint sightseeing and dinner ticket.

Catch a band at Fourth Street Live

If your dancing shoes could do with an outing, head to Fourth Street Live. Located in the heart of downtown Louisville, this dining and entertainment hot spot boasts several unique music venues. Try the Marquee Bar, Howl at the Moon, or the Kill Devil Club.

Explore the Louisville Mega Cavern

Get ready for adventure at the world's only underground aerial ropes challenge. Ranking high among attractions in Louisville, the Mega Cavern allows you to explore 17 miles of corridors beneath the city. If it all sounds a bit much, you can take one of the tram tours instead.

Hunt ghosts at Waverly Hills Sanatorium

If traversing a gigantic cavern on a zip line doesn't get your pulse racing, a visit to Waverly Hills Sanatorium will. It is, after all, described as the "most haunted place on earth." Don't just turn up, though. You will need to call ahead to book a guided tour or — if you dare — a paranormal experience.

Visit Cave Hill Cemetery and Arboretum

If the ghosts of former sanatorium patients are a little too much for you, you can enjoy a calmer experience at the Cave Hill Cemetery and Arboretum. See the graves of Colonel Harland Sanders and Nicola Marschall, designer of the Confederate flag, or simply enjoy a stroll among the Southern magnolia and golden larch trees.

See the exotic animals at Henry's Ark

Get back to the land of the living by paying a visit to the privately owned sanctuary Henry's Ark. Expect to find an eclectic collection of peacocks, waterfowl, camels, and buffalo at this free-to visit 600-acre petting zoo.

Ride the Louisville Loop

The Louisville Loop is a pedestrian and cycling trail that encircles the city. It's about 100 miles, so attempting to cover the full length of it is not for the faint-hearted. Thankfully, there are plenty of shorter trails to enjoy. Rent a bike and try the Riverside Gardens Path or the Levee Trail.
