Dr. Nadya Marinova, Deputy Minister for Tourism of Bulgaria: Bulgaria looks for 12-month tourism season

Bulgaria has always been a tourism destination even during the communist era, and Russians were an important visitor market. This has continued after the political changes. Bulgaria shares common backgrounds with Russia and is active in maintaining its ties with the Russian market. On the occasion of the MITT Tourism Exhibition in Moscow, last month (March 2015), we had the opportunity to meet and talk with Dr. Nadya Marinova, Deputy Minister for Tourism of Bulgaria (recently appointed in this position), who was kind to offer us an interview on the developments of Bulgarian tourism.

Interviewed by Christos Petreas, Special Features Editor of Travel Daily News

Dr. Marinova has responded to the following questions by Travel Daily News – TDN:

TDN: How is Bulgarian tourism developing in the recent period?

TDN: Has Bulgarian tourism been affected by the implications of the Ruble foreign exchange fluctuations?

TDN: What are your plans for the near future, and particularly for year-round tourism?

TDN: How do you view the European Union initiative “Europe as a single destination” particularly towards the newly developing markets?

TDN: Since you share a common religion – Christian Orthodox – with Russia, what are you doing on “religious tourism”?

TDN: Being a neighbor with Greece, which is also active in similar markets, are you considering any common activities?

Summarizing the responses of the Deputy Minister, we note that Bulgaria is concerned with the tourism economics of the Russian market, but is optimistic about it. In general, Bulgaria is actively pursuing diversification of its tourism offerings for year-round tourism, based on a number of resources and activities, while it is also approaching the newly developing markets – BRIC and South East Asia. The Minister pointed out their interest in “religious tourism” and the in-principle positive attitude towards tourism collaboration with Greece.

Travel Daily News thanks Deputy Minister Marinova for her time and for the responses, and wishes success in her work.
