Travel retailing in 2016: How NDC will remove barriers and inspire change

NDC ensures that airlines, travel agents and distribution partners will all have access to the same rich information about travel inventory, airline fares, routes, available seats, upgrades and other items, and that passengers will be able to purchase a variety of goods and services for a single trip from a single vendor.

In 2016, a game-changing airline standard called the New Distribution Capability (NDC) will fundamentally change how airline tickets, ancillary travel products and travel destination merchandise will be sold, marketed and purchased.

NDC ensures that airlines, travel agents and distribution partners will all have access to the same rich information about travel inventory, airline fares, routes, available seats, upgrades and other items, and that passengers will be able to purchase a variety of goods and services for a single trip from a single vendor. OpenJaw Technologies’ recently released report “Travel Retailing Takes Off: NDC’s Impact and Other Travel Retailing Trends for 2016” predicts a shift to complete transparency across the travel industry and explains how NDC will impact the way that both airlines and passengers will experience retailing in the near future.

Additional predictions from the report include:

  • New data-driven strategies, such as predictive analytics and machine learning, will help airlines and travel retailers understand who their passengers are, what they might be interested in purchasing at each step of their journey – and be able to offer it to them through a variety of sales channels.
  • An inevitable move away from airline-provided seat-back entertainment systems. Instead, content, connectivity and travel-related activities will shift to passengers’ mobile devices.
  • More changes for loyalty programs, marked by a shift away from rewards based on miles flown to rewards based on the value of the spend.

OpenJaw’s report completes a two-part 2016 trends series created with parent company, GuestLogix.
