Parsons-Odebrecht project in MIA honored with two awards by industry publication

Miami International Airport’s (MIA’s) Automated People Mover (APM) system has earned a 2012 Best Projects award from ENR Southeast.

PASADENA, CA – The Parsons-Odebrecht Joint Venture (POJV) is pleased to announce that the MIA Mover, Miami International Airport’s (MIA’s) Automated People Mover (APM) system, has earned a 2012 Best Projects award from ENR Southeast. The MIA Mover, along with 25 other project winners, will be featured in the November issue of the magazine as well as recognized at the annual Best Projects awards luncheon on November 15 in Orlando, FL.

Under a design-build contract, POJV constructed the MIA Mover guideway and stations as well as installed the full turnkey operating system, including eight state-of-the-art Crystal Mover APM vehicles. The MIA Mover is a 1.25-mile-long APM system linking the airport with its nearby multimodal rail transportation center and consolidated rental car facility, known as the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). The MIC is a common terminus for multicounty Tri-Rail rail-car service, in-county Metrorail heavy-rail service, and the MIA Mover.

“Parsons–Odebrecht is pleased to be recognized by ENR Southeast for its work on the MIA Mover APM system,” said Tom Barron, Parsons Group President. “Collaborating for more than a decade, this project adds to POJV’s long history of delivering successful projects to its customers.”

This year, ENR Southeast’s independent panel of judges reviewed more than 100 entries, choosing 26 projects across 16 separate categories as worthy of its “Best Projects” recognition. Entries came from the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

POJV is also pleased to announce that for the first time ever, ENR Southeast -along with all of ENR’s regional editions- has singled out one project, the MIA Mover, for its outstanding safety record and jobsite procedures. While safety has always been a factor for the “Best Projects” awards program, ENR Southeast’s premier “Best Safety” award emphasizes its critical nature.

“The selection of the MIA Mover project for the best safety award is yet another example of the importance placed on safety on this project. In 2011, the APM system earned VPP Star status from OSHA, and it is Florida’s first construction project and only the second project in OSHA’s eight-state Region IV to achieve VPP Star status- VPP’s highest recognition,” said Tom Barron.

“We are extremely proud of our team,” added Gilberto Neves, President & CEO of Odebrecht USA. “The numerous trainings that have been made available to our members and subcontractors have allowed us to raise safety awareness and practices, also promoting a great level of cooperation and ownership for the project.”

The POJV team has successfully managed and constructed more than $2.2 billion worth of work. Currently, POJV also serves as the prime contractor on the North Terminal Development project at MIA, and the team completed the South Terminal Development in 2007. POJV has awarded more than 150 contracts to local small businesses over the past 10 years, totaling more than $310 million in work.
