Tourism remained strong in 2012 as Britons sought solace from their money worries overseas. Spain, Europe and the USA remained the most visited places according to Direct Holidays. Despite the political and economic crisis, Greece remained a firm favourite last year.
LONDON – Despite the well documented double, or triple-dip recession, 2012 has been a remarkably good year for holidaymakers and holiday providers. Travel agent, Direct Holidays, takes a look at the past twelve months and the destinations which topped the charts as must-see locations.
Spain
The most popular of all holiday destinations, Spain offers a diverse sunny climate, wonderful beaches and a range of attractions that suit almost anyone. From the sweltering hot beaches of Malaga to the more temperate and culturally-rich Barcelona; youngsters preferred the nightlife of Benidorm holidays whilst older travellers sought relaxed but culturally rich experiences in the country’s capital, Madrid.
France
The Gallic country comes in a close second; Brits have always enjoyed relaxing in the green land of their French neighbours. World-famous food and plenty of fine wines, France provides a variety of holiday attractions with Paris remaining the undisputed city of love.
Greece
Despite the political and economic crisis, Greece remained a firm favourite last year. Islands such as Corfu attract the lion’s share of visitors but the whole country still has many of the qualities holidaymakers expect from leading destinations; a hot climate, wonderful food and plenty of golden beaches.
Egypt
Also featuring in the list of top holiday destinations, Egypt, like Greece, has had a turbulent 2012. However Egypt holidays still remained a popular option for those looking for a country rich in culture and basked in sunlight. Alongside the famous pyramids and other archaeological sites, resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh with its top-class diving and beaches topped the agenda for travellers.
India
The Western coast of India has become increasingly popular for British tourists with Goa holidays becoming more and more common. With 125 km of beaches, it is not hard to see why either. There are many places of interest but having been under Portuguese control for so many years it is fascinating to see Latin influence on the state, especially when it comes to the food.
USA
As the cost of flights continues to fall, more Brits are keeping up the so-called “special relationship” by holidaying in the United States. Florida holidays offer warm climates and golden beaches whereas New York attracted culture vultures. California was a Mecca for surfers and musicians whilst those looking for thrill and adventure were tempted to try their luck in the world’s biggest casino and party capital: Las Vegas.
