September tHPI: European hotel prices increase both month-on-month and year-on-year

Based on the 50 most popular European destinations on trivago, one night this September will cost an average of £110, in comparison to £98 in August and £105 in September 2012. Significant price increases can be found for Oktoberfest in Munich and for Fashion Week in London, Milan and Paris.

European hotel prices have increased by an average of 13 per cent month-on-month and 5 per cent year-on-year, according to the September trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), reported monthly by hotel comparison website trivago.co.uk. Based on the 50 most popular European destinations on trivago, one night this September will cost an average of £110, in comparison to £98 in August and £105 in September 2012. Significant price increases can be found for Oktoberfest in Munich and for Fashion Week in London, Milan and Paris.

Oktoberfest: Hotel Prices up by 69% in Munich
Hotel prices in Munich have increased by 69 per cent this month for Oktoberfest. One night in September will cost an average of £181, compared to £107 per night in August. One night during the popular beer festival, which runs from Saturday 21st September until Sunday 6th October, will cost an average of £243. The most expensive day to book is Saturday 28th September, when one night will cost an average of £291.

It is common for hotel prices to increase during Oktoberfest, which is the world’s largest fair and attracts over 6 million visitors from around the world. However, hotel prices have risen by 15 per cent year-on-year, suggesting hoteliers have increased their prices more than usual this year. One night in September 2012 cost an average of £157, compared to £181 this September.

Hotel prices have also increased in the neighbouring Bavarian towns of Erding (up 55 per cent to an average of £113 per night) and Ismaning (up 40 per cent to £119) this month.

Fashion Week: Hotel Prices up in London, Milan and Paris
Hotel prices have increased in the fashion capitals of London, Milan and Paris, which will each host their own Fashion Week this September. One night in London will cost an average of £172 this month, which is a 6 per cent increase in comparison to August (average of £163 per night) and September 2012 (average of £162 per night). The London Fashion Week will run from Friday 13th to Tuesday 17th September.

In Milan, hotel prices have increased by 50 per cent in comparison to August. One night in September will cost an average of £159, compared to £106 last month. The Fashion Week will attract visitors from Wednesday 18th to Monday 23rd September. Similarly, hotel prices in Paris have increased by 46 per cent this month. One night in September will cost an average of £183, compared to £125 in August. The Paris Fashion Week runs from Tuesday 24th September until Wednesday 2nd October.

This September sees European hotel prices increase by an average of 13 per cent compared to last month and 5 per cent compared to last year, suggesting a general trend of increasing hotel prices. Below are the 20 cities with the largest percentage increase in comparison to August and 20 cities with the largest percentage increase in comparison to September 2012. Both lists are based on the 50 most popular European destinations on trivago and prices shown are the monthly average for a standard double room.

Many destinations appear on both lists, including Brussels (up 64 per cent month-on-month and 14 per cent year-on-year), Venice (up 44 per cent m-o-m and 16 per cent y-o-y), Amsterdam (up 37 per cent m-o-m and 22 per cent y-o-y) and Barcelona (up 33 per cent m-o-m and 24 per cent y-o-y).
