Alpine Guru unveils top5 predictions for the chalet rental market

Leading winter accommodation provider predicts key trends for the 2013/14 ski season.

With the new ski season rapidly approaching, Oli Corkhill, Director of luxury winter accommodation provider Alpine Guru, reveals his predictions for the chalet rental market for the season ahead:

1. Early bookings earlier
Chalets are being booked even earlier than in previous years. Customers want to secure the best chalets in the most popular resorts during peak times such as New Year and February half-term, now!

However, the high volume of early bookings, along with stringent minimum stay requirements in the most popular resorts, will continue to open a gap in the market for up and coming resorts that offer real value for money by comparison. This gap is an opportunity for ‘in the know’ chalet agents to promote properties that have recently opened in quieter lesser-known resorts.

Alpine Guru recommends the villages of St. Luc and Grimentz in the Val d’Anniviers valley which has quiet slopes and luxurious places to stay such as Chalet Charr and Chalet CBC. Chalet Rotstocki in Grindelwald offers stunning serviced apartments with skiing in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland. For super luxury, Alpine Guru suggests Tiger’s Nest Lodge in the small village of Les Masses in Les 4 Vallees. While more adventurous holiday-makers will be rewarded for trying places like Villa Gella in the Rhodope Mountains.

2. Soaring popularity of tailor-made chalet packages
2013 has already seen a significant increase in demand for tailor-made chalet holidays. Customers are looking for chalets on their terms – price, duration and service. Therefore, accommodation operators who offer the most flexibility on price, length of stay and level of service for the 2013/14 winter season will see the highest occupancy levels and margins.

3. Austria and Italy will officially become ‘available’
2013 has seen a sharp increase in demand for high-quality and contemporary rental properties in Austria and Italy. Currently, supply does not meet this demand due to a lack of suitable product. Over the coming winter season, an increasing number of luxury properties in these countries will become available to rent in order to keep up with this growing demand.

Savvy property investors have already started targeting new emerging resorts to deliver more exciting, diverse and quirky properties. This trend will only continue.

4. Demanding emerging markets
During the 2012/13 season, there was a steep increase in demand for luxury chalet rentals, largely driven by the emerging markets of the Far East (including Australia), Middle East and South Africa. This spike in the popularity of winter and alpine holidays in Europe from these markets will continue resulting in a further increase in the number of chalet rentals from buyers from these regions.

Enquiries and bookings from other emerging countries, particularly India and Africa, will also increase in volume for the 2013/14 season.

5. Corporate market recovery
In line with a more positive outlook for the UK economy, the corporate market for chalet weekends will show signs of recovery. However, there will continue to be a much tighter grip on spending.
