Influental course rankings confirm Abu Dhabi as Midde East golfers destination of choice

With six clubs within a 90-minute drive, Abu Dhabi has a wealth of golf offerings – from parkland to beach and links courses – for all types of player. Seasoned veterans and beginners can take their pick of sea, dune, oasis or mountain backdrops and are welcome at all clubs.

ABU DHABI, UAE – Three acclaimed championship Abu Dhabi golf courses have dominated the prestigious regional golf course rankings compiled by Golf Digest Middle East magazine, widely considered the game’s voice of authority in the region. Yas Links, on the emirate’s entertainment destination of Yas Island, also accrued further gravitas, becoming the first golf course to accomplish the award double, winning the vote of Golf Digest’s experts panel and its readers. It is the only ranking of its kind in the region and continues a long-held tradition begun by Golf Digest U.S. almost 60 years ago.

“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of so many,”
commented Chris White, General Manager Yas Links. “We have an extra special golf course and are committed to delivering world-class course conditioning alongside a truly memorable guest experience. To have such categorical support and acknowledgement from such a respected panel of industry experts gives us great motivation moving into 2014.”

Designed by one of golf’s most creative and innovative architects, Kyle Phillips, Yas Links represents a milestone for golf course design in the emirate. The course boasts one of the game’s most spectacular finishing stretches, sitting opposite the Yas Marina F1 race track and in view of the iconic Ferrari World Abu Dhabi theme park and adjacent to the all-new Yas Waterworld. In addition, Abu Dhabi’s three championship courses ranked in the top four in the ‘Readers Poll’ (Abu Dhabi Golf Club claiming #2 spot and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club #4) reiterating the appeal each holds with Middle East golfers.

The Golf Digest Middle East course rankings list is split into ‘Expert panellists’ and ‘Reader’s Poll’ sections. Panellists comprise leading figures in the golf industry, tour professionals and tournament amateurs, assessing the courses across a selection of criteria, including; shot values, design variety, resistance to scoring, memorability, aesthetics, conditions and ambience. Meanwhile the magazine’s readers are asked to vote for their five favourite courses in order, with points awarded on a sliding scale.

“Abu Dhabi has demonstrated once again its consistent appeal amongst golfers in the Middle East,” commented Editor in Chief, Robbie Greenfield. “Each course in Abu Dhabi has its own unique qualities, with both our panel and readers unanimous in their praise across all of Golf Digest’s criteria. A special mention must go to the team at Yas Links. It was a very new course when it first topped the rankings in 2011, and has just kept getting better. It has become a genuine trophy course that sits at the top of people’s ‘must-play’ list.”
