Prolific Jean-Michel Gathy adds two new outstanding Aman resorts to his design honours

Principal designer at Denniston Architects, Jean-Michel brings a sense of place to each project – an intricate dance between architecture, interiors and landscapes, where a voice is given to the natural setting that is in harmony with his contemporary aesthetic, thus creating an environment where drama and intimacy unite.

ynonymous with some of the most spectacular luxury hotels in the world, Jean-Michel Gathy‘s enduring architectural and design expertise is once again in the spotlight with the successful launch of his two most recent projects: the interiors of the opulent Aman Canal Grande in Venice and the coastal retreat Amano’i in southern Vietnam.

Jean-Michel’s signature style, pitch-perfectly in tune with Aman’s trademark vision, is richly evident in both Aman openings – from the elaborate frescos and flamboyant Rococo ornamentation that elegantly streamline down to geometric furnishings at Aman Canal Grande, to the unobtrusively placed villas hugging the hillside around the serenely scenic Vinh Hy Bay at Amano’i.

“I’m always inspired by the location of my projects; I like to honour both the landscape and local tradition.  As palaces and hotels, Venice and Vietnam couldn’t be more different, yet I set out to achieve a similar aesthetic – to inject a contemporary haven within a culturally rich environment, one that offers guests an authentic yet dramatic experience,” comments Jean-Michel Gathy.

Aman Canal Grande, San Polo, Venice Italy

Arriving via the weaving waters of Venice’s Grand Canal, guests are welcomed into the regal world of the 16th century Palazzo Papadopoli, in which the hotel is housed; a world where the allure and romance of the city entwines with signature Aman-style at the hands of Jean-Michel Gathy.

Each of the 24 suites and communal areas is an artwork unto itself. The textures of the original features – ornate cornicing, carved marble, intricate murals and wood panelling – is quietly complemented by opalescent fabrics and smooth-lined furnishings, creating a clever reflective palate for the historic splendour.

The majesty of the interiors evoke bygone style with contemporary brilliance. Artfully restored, the soaring ceilings, sweeping staircases, gilded ballroom, 300-year-old leather-walled library and original Murano chandeliers sit effortlessly alongside the modern conveniences, cutting-edge design and ambient up-lighting ensuring views just as spectacular within as to the Grand Canal and city beyond.

The unexpected gardens and secret spa will keep guests guessing; intrigued to discover the hidden corners of the hotel alongside the magic and mystery of the city itself.

Amano’i, Vinh Hy Bay, Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam

Translated as “peace place” Amano’i exudes calm, contemporary, coastal chic. Secluded yet radiating the energy of the elements and fishing village of Vinh Hy, Amano’i reveals a Vietnam less discovered. Set within Nui Chua National Park – 29000 hectares of virtually untouched coastline and marine habitats – the retreat occupies the hills and shore of one of the most picturesque bays in Vietnam.

Inspired by a traditional Vietnamese communal hall the Central Pavilion – housing the restaurant, bar, library and boutique – steps down the hillside along with the cliff-top pool, to capitalise on the far-reaching views of turquoise waters, emerald hills, granite cliffs and white-sand beaches.

Designed to blend seamlessly into the environment and echo traditional Vietnamese architecture, the 31 individual pavilions and five villas – some with private pools – inconspicuously punctuate the landscape with their pitched roofs, slatted doors, exposed beams, timber decking and earthy, wood grain hue furnishings. The inside is designed to make the most of the outside; integrating the surroundings and natural heritage.

Continuing the cascading journey towards the beautiful bay reveals the lotus-lake Aman Spa – five double treatment rooms with double baths; aromatic herb, rice and coffee inspired treatment list – and Beach Club area with its pool that parallels the silhouette of the shoreline.
