London hotel market snapshot hoteliers limbering up for bumper Marathon Weekend

More than half of the capital’s hotel rooms are already filled for the night ahead of the London Marathon (51.5 per cent), with the weekend showing committed occupancy at 43.7 per cent on average (Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 April 2014).

As runners, supporters and spectators head to London for the big race, forward-looking data from TravelClick, the leading hotel market intelligence provider, shows that hotel bookings are up compared with 2013’s race weekend (20-21 April 2013). At this point in the booking window, committed occupancy for the weekend as a whole is showing an increase of 23.8 per cent which is particularly encouraging as this year the event takes place the weekend ahead of the Easter break.

The annual marathon takes in some of London’s top sights and landmarks including Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, and continues to prove a big driver for inbound tourism. TravelClick’s data on group bookings for the weekend shows a rise in bookings of almost a third (28.5 per cent) against last year’s marathon weekend. Transient bookings also show strong growth with an increase of 20 per cent.

London’s hoteliers are reaping the benefits of the iconic race as average daily rate (ADR) is also showing an increase of 8.8 per cent on average over the weekend.

Information is based on data collated by TravelClick on 14 February 2014 from 113 London hotels with a combined capacity of 26,748.
