New product launches take centre stage at World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo 2014

FlyFit has developed a healthy product line focusing on premium drinks and snacks to promote passenger well-being in the air.

The third edition of World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo (WTCE) will showcase an impressive range of the latest products on offer in the travel catering and on-board services sector when WTCE 2014 opens its doors on 8 April at the Hamburg Messe in Germany. Over 230 companies from 28 countries will be exhibiting at the world’s largest travel catering and onboard services event, which is organised by Reed Exhibitions.

FlyFit has developed a healthy product line focusing on premium drinks and snacks to promote passenger well-being in the air. At WTCE 2014, FlyFit will launch a new vitamin-rich yoghurt pot weighing 100g which can fit in any snack box. The company will be exhibiting on the gategroup stand this year.

“FlyFit has researched its products with airline crews, passengers and caterers in mind to provide less handling, long shelf life and lightweight packaging and design,” explained Boudewijn van Eeghen, Chief Commercial Officer of FlyFit.

“Given the importance of the “no waste rule” for airlines’ operations, we have developed a healthy raspberry yoghurt which has a six-month shelf life and can be stored at ambient temperature. This delicious yoghurt contains no preservatives or artificial sweeteners and is also gluten free and Halal certified. We pride ourselves in delivering quality and sustainable products and in the near future, more flavours will be available,” said Boudewijn van Eeghen.

The yoghurt is based on a balanced mix of minerals and vitamins, C, E and B with less than 5 percent lactose content and includes natural ingredients to help revitalise travelling passengers.

As a leading independent global provider of products, services and solutions related to an airline passenger’s on-board experience, gategroup will present some of its newest products this year that include contemporary service ware that combines innovation and design.

On display at WTCE 2014 will be Japan Airlines’ new economy-class offering jointly developed with deSter, a gategroup company. deSter is a leader in food presentation concepts and onboard service equipment including space-saving and lightweight solutions combining aesthetics and functionality.

The new and unique design is inspired by Japanese food with geometric styling. Square shapes with a slim red rim around the borders add sleekness to an otherwise minimalistic design. The handle-free tea cup represents the red circle in the Japanese flag, bringing alive the overarching Japanese theme.

The extra-long plate also doubles up as a service tray for a snack or coffee service. Placing the bowls on the plate also reduces the chance of sliding on the tray. The elegant and organised multi-purpose tray set allows the Japanese flag carrier to better connect and surprise their passengers with an exciting way of serving quality meals.

Netherlands-based Direct Air Flow had the ability to manufacture a range of catering equipment servicing both the airline and rail passenger sectors. A key attraction on its stand this year will be the maiden appearance of its coffee trolley specifically designed for Eurostar’s onboard service provider, Momentum, with the aim of offering a superior level of service to its premier-class passengers.

According to Direct Air Flow, the trolley is one of the first of its kind to go into full operation combining the use of the coffee machine with a rechargeable battery. Its main benefit is the versatility of being able to work from an independent power supply that allows the customer to be served coffee at the seat rather than being sourced from a galley. There is a choice of coffee types available from the Lavazza range and the unit incorporates a built-in waste unit for used coffee capsules.

“We anticipate more rail companies looking at similar systems in future as at present most types of “at seat” service is via traditional thermos cans which don’t offer the appeal of fresh coffee. Although this particular trolley solution was jointly developed with Eurostar and Momentum to meet their specifications, we anticipate a great deal of interest from other rail operators in how a similar design could suit their individual onboard needs,” said Jamie Melleney, Sales and Marketing Manager at Direct Air Flow.

Broderick’s will be making its debut at WTCE 2014 targeting the travel retail sector with its new range of mini-bites retail packs. These contain 36 individually wrapped mini versions of the company’s popular bars, Road Rocking Choc Choc Bloc (Rocky Road), Tiff Toff in the Tuffen (Tiffin) and Caramental (Belgian chocolate caramel shortbread). A mixed bag of 75 mini-bites will also be available for the food service sector.

Commenting on the launch of the mini-bite packs, Bernard Broderick said: “We all need a bite-sized treat at times and particularly when travelling. The mini-bites don’t take up much room so they are perfect for carrying on board or as a quick, indulgent snack while travelling or awaiting a departure. These quality mouthfuls, made from the best Irish ingredients, hit the spot. We are confident that they will be a big hit within the travel retail sector as they are attractively packaged and keenly priced to ensure generous profit margins.”

All of Broderick’s products are handmade in their family-run, Dublin-based bakery, Ina’s Kitchen Desserts, established by Ina Broderick in 1983. The company uses high quality ingredients, including real Irish butter, Belgian chocolate, home-made caramel and Irish oats.

Gut Springenheide is a leading manufacturer of egg-related pre-cooked dishes such as omelettes, fried eggs, egg souffle, egg savoury mille-feuille, real egg shells filled with creme brulee, mousses and savoury fillings. This year, the company will be presenting its new range of egg creations including polenta and spinach filling and chive egg rolls.

Another new arrival in the egg portfolio is a crepe filled with an aromatic leek, mushroom and carrot filling, which weighs 60g. The new additions are perfect for breakfast or as a starter or side dish.

All products are manufactured without the use of colourings, flavourings or preservatives, as well as complying with the demand for meat-free alternative foods. For those with a sweet tooth, Gut Springenheide can also fill natural eggshells with the smoothest praline chocolate as well as tempting visitors to its stand to sample its brightly-coloured nougat eggs presented in attractive packaging.

“There is no doubt that visitors to this year’s show will be able to view an impressive array of new products and services from a truly international mix of companies covering both the air and rail sectors,” said Exhibition Manager, Archana Sharma. “WTCE is now recognised as the key meeting place for industry to stay right up to date with the latest product innovations and to network with leading business professionals, both on the show and conference floors.”
