Historic Hotels of Europe met in Wales

Launched 15 years ago by eight founding members, HHE has doubled its membership since 2000 and now represents more than 600 properties throughout Europe. Properties invited into membership of HHE through their own associations must have an historic ''Story to Tell'' and members include castles, manors, historic inns and country houses.

On 6th and 7th April, the prestigious marketing body, Historic Hotels of Europe held their annual General Assembly in Wales. This will be the first time in more than ten years for the group to come to Wales.

Launched 15 years ago by eight founding members, HHE has doubled its membership since 2000 and now represents more than 600 properties throughout Europe.

This year’s General Assembly was held in Wales and hosted by ‘Welsh Rarebits’ at Bodysgallen Hall & Spa near Llandudno. Among the countries represented were Greece, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Slovakia.

Properties invited into membership of HHE through their own associations must have an historic ”Story to Tell” and members include castles, manors, historic inns and country houses. Personal service and high standards, good food sourced as locally as possible, comfortable surroundings, attention to detail and a warm welcome are all of paramount importance to the HHE brand.

At the April meeting there will be a presentation of HHE’s updated Corporate Image and discussions will take place on the new Brand Exposure and Marketing Strategy. Following the formal proceedings delegates will be taken on a guided tour of Victorian Llandudno and Medieval Conwy before dining at another of Welsh Rarebits’ historic icons – The Olde Bulls Head in Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.

Visit Wales hosted a Welcome Reception for delegates on the opening night.

Emyr Griffith, Welsh Rarebits, said: “Our hotels have been at the forefront of the drive to attract a higher spending tourist to Wales for almost 30 years and we are delighted that HHE has acknowledged our support by staging their prestigious meeting at one of our flagship properties.”

Tourism Minister, Edwina Hart, said: “I’m delighted to extend a very warm welcome to Wales to the Historic Hotels of Europe group and hope that they have successful meeting in Wales over the weekend. Wales heritage and culture is a key part in what sets us apart from other destinations and Wales’ historic hotels are a fundamental part of this offering.”

Barbara Avdis, Chairman of the Historic Hotels of Europe, said: “We are enchanted to be in Wales and the historic Bodysgallen Hall and Spa, and experience the warm welcome and hospitality. At the Historic Hotels we celebrate the individuality of each property, because the individuality is eclectic, authentic and stays true to the cultural characteristics. By discovering today the magnificent country of Wales and the Bodysgallen we witness your passion to share the cultural heritage of Wales through excellent hospitality”.
