Based on the flight schedules of the three airlines that serve the Brazilian market from Miami – American Airlines, GOL, and TAM – MIA will have 578 departures to Brazil in June, up from 437 last June, for a 30 percent increase.
MIAMI – With the kickoff of the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil just two months away, Miami International Airport is projecting a solid bump in international passengers bolstered by soccer fans making their way to the global sports event. That uptick will be aided by TAM Airlines’ new direct weekly service to World Cup host city Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil beginning on Saturday, May 31.
MIA is well positioned to serve fans of the World’s Game as they travel to and from Brazil: with the addition of Fortaleza, the global gateway will serve a total of 11 destinations in South America’s largest and most populous nation, more than any other U.S. airport. Notably, those destinations include 10 of the 12 World Cup host cities. Brazil is already the airport’s top international market, with more than 1.6 million travelers annually and more than 100 weekly flights departing MIA to Brazil.

With the increase in scheduled flights, MIA estimates that about 100,000 passengers will fly from MIA to Brazil this June during the World Cup, up from 75,000 last June. More than 600,000 foreign visitors are expected to attend the tournament, with MIA serving as one of the primary connection hubs.
“Brazil is already the biggest piece of our international portfolio here at MIA, and that deep connection will only grow stronger during the World Cup,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. Gonzalez. “We’re very excited to welcome fans of the jogo bonito from around the globe to MIA and we’re committed to ensuring that their journey to and from the 2014 World Cup is just as enjoyable as the final destination.”
With the addition of TAM’s new service in May, MIA will offer service to the following destinations in Brazil: Belem, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Sao Paulo.
