World Cup 2014: Travel interest increases by 387%, while Brazilians flee to Campos do Jordao

While global travel interest to Brazil has increased by 387 per cent during the World Cup period (12th June to 13th July), hotel searches to Brazil in general have only increased by 6 per cent year-on-year. This leaves some doubt as to whether Brazilian tourism will benefit in the long run from the World Cup.

LONDON – Hotel searches to Brazil during the World Cup are up 387 per cent year-on-year, according to data from hotel search website trivago.co.uk. Meanwhile, mountain getaway Campos do Jordao has become the most popular domestic destination for Brazilians this June and July, as they attempt to escape the World Cup crowds. When search data was analysed, UK fans consider Italy to be their biggest rival and have more confidence England will qualify second in the group stage.

Travel Interest Increases by 387% During World Cup, 6% After
While global travel interest to Brazil has increased by 387 per cent during the World Cup period (12th June to 13th July), hotel searches to Brazil in general have only increased by 6 per cent year-on-year. This leaves some doubt as to whether Brazilian tourism will benefit in the long run from the World Cup.

Hotel searches made by UK travellers to Brazil increased by 19 per cent, which rose to 344 per cent during the World Cup period. Unsurprisingly, the majority of Brits searched for Rio de Janeiro (59.4 per cent), followed by Sao Paulo (8.5 per cent), Salvador (4.0 per cent), Manaus (3.7 per cent) and Belo Horizonte (3.4 per cent).

Brazilians Flee to Campos do Jordao
During June and July of 2013, Rio de Janeiro was the most popular domestic destination among Brazilians, followed by Fortaleza, Gramado, Sao Paulo and finally Campos do Jordao. This year, Campos do Jordao has jumped to first place.

Situated a 2.5 hour drive from Sao Paulo and a 4.5 hour drive from Rio de Janeiro, Campos do Jordao provides Brazilians with the opportunity to escape the World Cup crowds without venturing too far.

UK Fans Consider Italy to be Biggest Rival
During the group stage Brits expressed equal interest in all England matches, irrespective of opponent or location. England versus Italy in Manaus on 14th June received 32 per cent of hotel searches, Uruguay in Sao Paulo on 19th June received 34 per cent and Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte 33 per cent.

Out of the group stage opponents, UK users consider Italy to be their biggest rival. 59 per cent of all searches were for Italy versus Uruguay in Natal on 24th June and 41 per cent for Italy versus Costa Rica in Recife on 20th June. However, just 0.1 per cent of searches were for Uruguay versus Costa Rica in Fortaleza on 15th June!

Small peaks were also seen for Spain versus Holland, Germany versus Portugal, Germany versus Ghana, Portugal versus Ghana and Ecuador versus France. This suggest UK fans would bet on either Germany or Portugal to win – interesting considering the result on Monday night.

95% Expect England to Qualify Second, 5% to Qualify First
Out of all the hotel searches for a potential England Round of 16 match, just 5 per cent of users expected England to qualify first (29th June in Recife), compared to 95 per cent of searches for England to qualify second (28th June in Rio). However, the location could have also influenced searches, with Rio being a popular destination among Brits.

For a potential Quarter Final, 66 per cent of searches were for England to qualify second (4th July in Fortaleza) compared to 34 per cent of searches for England to qualify first (5th July in Salvador).
