Surprise? Hotel rates drop by double digits in Brazil immediately following World Cup matches

A dramatic, double-digit hotel rate decline in all twelve Brazilian cities that hosted tournament play is now underway, according to hotel search trivago.com.

Hotel prices in Rio de Janeiro will fall by some 42%, just hours after Germany defeated Brazil in the 2014 World Cup final. A dramatic, double-digit hotel rate decline in all twelve Brazilian cities that hosted tournament play is now underway, according to hotel search trivago.com – a scenario eerily similar to the price drop that played out in Sochi, Russia following the 2014 Winter Olympics.

trivago analyzed hotel rates from all prices reported in the twelve World Cup host cities across Brazil both before and after tournament play and found that overnight rates have decreased suddenly and dramatically following the final match in each of their respective arenas. A rate decrease of 43% can be seen across the board, with Cuiaba experiencing the most drastic rate drop – prices have already fallen an average of 56% in just 7 days following the final match in the city, from $438 per night during the World Cup to $194.

Rio de Janeiro, which saw some of the highest hotel rates throughout the tournament as host for the final match, is also experiencing a post-World Cup reality check. The average price for a hotel in the city dropped from $493 for Sunday night’s final match to $287 Monday night. An overall 44% drop in prices is expected in Rio this week alone.

Sao Paulo, the economic hub of South America, is faring better.

After the last World Cup match in Sao Paulo, room rates fell 20%. The average price for a hotel room in the city while it was hosting matches was $182. Following July 9 play between the Netherlands and Argentina, the average price per night fell to $146.

What is expected in all 12 host cities?
Below is a more comprehensive breakdown of the average hotel price in each host city, during and after the World Cup.

PINAKAS
* For each host city, the World Cup period includes the day preceding the first match played in the host city to the day of the last match in the same city.
** The week after the World Cup includes the day after the last game played in the host city and the next 6 days.

What happened after Sochi?

The current price drop seen in Brazil following the World Cup is surprisingly similar to the drop seen after the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Last February, hotel prices dropped an average of 31% the week immediately following the 17 day event. The average price for a hotel room was $229 during the Games and abruptly fell to $158 after the closing ceremony. Prices decreased another 27% the following week, before stabilizing back to pre-Olympic prices.
