Silver Line Metro to open in Washington, DC offering visitors cheap and quick airport transfers to downtown DC

Five new stations have been added to the Metro system: McLean, Tysons Corner (a premier shopping area on the outskirts of Washington, DC), Greensboro, Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East.

Metro General Manager and CEO, Richard Sarles, has announced the opening date for the eagerly anticipated Silver Line Metrorail service, noon on Saturday, 26 July 2014. This new metro line will allow visitors to get from Washington Dulles Airport to downtown DC for $11 or less.

An approximate seven hour flight from London to Washington Dulles Airport, Washington DC is becoming increasingly popular as a long weekend destination and this new, cheap transfer option only adds to the value of a break in the United States’ capital city. Destination DC actively promotes the abundance of free things to do in the city, which includes entrance to a variety of attractions including, museums, theatres and access to outdoor activities.

Five new stations have been added to the Metro system: McLean, Tysons Corner (a premier shopping area on the outskirts of Washington, DC), Greensboro, Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East.

Eventually the Silver Line Metro line will extend all the way to Dulles Airport, likely by 2018. For the time being, a new bus connection, Silver Line Express, will whisk passengers nonstop between Wiehle-Reston East and Washington Dulles International Airport. Buses depart every six minutes during rush hour, and every 12-20 minutes during off-peak times.

Fares on the Silver Line Express will be just $5 each way, payable with cash or credit card. When combined with Metrorail fares, a trip from anywhere in the Metrorail system to or from Dulles will cost $11 or less. The Silver Line Express will provide passengers with a direct, speedy connection to Dulles Airport, with buses operating every 15 minutes during weekday peak hours and every 20 minutes off-peak.

Passenger amenities on the Silver Line Express will include free Wi-Fi, spacious luggage storage, reduced fares, brand-new buses and front door service at the airport.

The metro system in Washington, DC is an easy way for visitors to explore the city’s attractions and vibrant neighbourhoods cost effectively.
