Seattle ranks as most expensive Labor Day destination, survey shows

To stay in the least expensive double room, travelers to Seattle will have to pay $319 per night over the long Labor Day weekend. Compared to regular rates, that figure represents an increase of over 80%.

SEATTLE – Seattle is North America’s most expensive destination for this upcoming Labor Day weekend, according to a new survey from TravelMag.com. The survey compared 30 popular destinations in the United States and Canada based on their cost of lodging.

To stay in the least expensive double room, travelers to Seattle will have to pay $319 per night over the long Labor Day weekend. Compared to regular rates, that figure represents an increase of over 80%. Bumbershoot, Seattle’s annual music and arts festival, which just happens to be take place every Labor Day weekend, is mainly responsible for the high hotel rates.

Behind Seattle ranks Atlantic City, New Jersey. This oceanside gambling mecca ranks second most expensive on the survey with an average nightly rate of $253. Atlanta rounds out the Top 3 with an average overnight price tag of $239 for the most affordable double room. In this capital of the U.S. state of Georgia, prices have more than doubled in comparison with regular rates.

Travelers on a budget will also find more affordable options. In Washington, D.C., for example, a room can be found for around $100 per night over the Labor Day weekend. That’s 25% cheaper than the same room is normally. The least expensive Labor Day destination according to the survey is Orlando, Florida. There the cheapest double room will set back guests a mere $57 per night.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive destinations in North America for this year’s Labor Day weekend. The prices shown reflect the daily rate for each destination’s cheapest available double room (minimum 3-star hotel) for the time period spanning August 29 through September 1, 2014.
