Back to school triggers the Great Escape… for parents

14% increase in hotel and flight breaks taken by couples. More parents choosing to travel off peak without children. European cities most popular destinations, offering fun in the sun.

The children may have returned to school after their summer break, but the holiday period has just begun for many parents as they book overseas escapes this term.

A recent report into holiday habits carried out by travel company SuperBreak found that two thirds of parents are now choosing to holiday without their children in a bid to enjoy some time together as a couple.

A third of parents felt travelling without children gave them more freedom to visit the locations they wanted to see, saved them money on the holiday and avoided any complications of taking children out of school during term time.

The European destinations of Rome and Paris were the most popular for short breaks with 62% of respondents claiming a city break offered the perfect balance of activities whilst enjoying warmer weather. More than 90% of people said they wouldn’t choose a beach destination for a short break as it wasn’t long enough to relax and unwind.

The research also found that most parents were happy to leave their children for three days, with grandparents being the preferred choice of guardian whilst they were away.

Khalid Amin at SuperBreak said: “For many families, a European city break isn’t top of the list as a family holiday, so having a few days away without the children is a great way of ticking off some of those ‘must see’ destinations whilst having some quality time as a couple – many of us in the office can identify with that rationale!

“As a company we have definitely seen a shift in booking patterns this year, with an increase in customers choosing to travel out of peak season to save money (42%) or to take advantage of quieter locations (28%). With so many European destinations on our doorstep, it’s never been easier to escape for a few days away with or without the children!”
