Small but refined – the trend towards the well-designed budget hotel

Business travellers especially tend to upgrade their stay in a strange city more and more with the attractiveness of the hotel and are booking such hotels much more often as opposed to chain hotels due to their often trendy decoration.

LONDON – The standardisation and anonymity of large hotels belong to yesterday when selecting a hotel. The international online booking portal hotel.info has conducted a survey with more than 2,000 booking customers and discovered that well-designed budget hotels are being booked more and more frequently by business travellers and those taking a city break.

Business travellers especially tend to upgrade their stay in a strange city more and more with the attractiveness of the hotel and are booking such hotels much more often as opposed to chain hotels due to their often trendy decoration. If the hotel bar or restaurant are also meeting points for the fashionable local public, then so much the better. This means that the guest does not have to waste time looking for such places in the neighbourhood as he or she has them directly in their hotel.

“If we examine the booking patterns of our customers in the city break and short trip segment in comparison with last year we can see a definite increase in bookings for well-designed budget hotels”, explained Ralf Priemer, Managing Director at hotel.info.

Good design in hotels doesn’t have to be expensive. Well-designed and quirky budget hotels are definitely in. The motto “Plenty of design for not much money“ is becoming more and more popular. In this way these hotels can take their place in a niche between luxury and low-budget hotels.

“Within the area of design hotels one must differentiate them one from another through the price just as in other hotel categories. Here it is possible to find such hotels in the lower price category as well as at luxury hotel prices. We try to ensure that we also offer room prices which do not exceed 100 euros per night“, explained Ralf Priemer.

The hotel.info editors have put together a selection of well-loved design hotels in favourite cities throughout Europe. In this selection there are individual hotels as well as chain hotels. All of them have two things in common: In these hotels great emphasis is placed on design and all of them can be booked at a reasonable rate – most of them at less than 70 GBP.

The Five Hotel.

The Five Hotel in Paris mixes art and originality at the highest level. The name is representative of the five senses which the hotel presents. An art gallery at the reception and a short film shown in the lift get the guest in the right mood before they enter their atmospheric room. Here the eye cannot take in everything at once: light sculptures alternate with a twinkling, starry ceiling and there are Chinese lacquer artworks by the artist Isabelle Emmerique. The sense of smell is also catered for as the guest can select from 5 different perfumes in the room.

Hotel Granados 83.

In a former hospital right in the city centre of Barcelona and dating from the 19th century the Hotel Granados 83 was created. The interior design is impressive with its simple decoration and items from Jugendstil and Art Deco. A roof terrace with a bar and swimming pool together with a roof top fitness studio ensure action while peace and Relaxation are conveyed by the collection of Hindu and Buddhist art from the 10th and 11th centuries.
