Hotel searches made on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September were compared to searches made the previous weekend (13th and 14th September). Searches were for a hotel stay during the following two months. The data is based on UK platform visits from 75 million global monthly users.
LONDON – Hotel searches to the island of Malta have increased by up to 71 per cent, according to hotel comparison website trivago.co.uk. The increase in travel interest follows Prince William’s visit this weekend, to mark the country’s 50th anniversary of independence.
Travel interest to Qawra, a district of the popular St. Paul’s Bay on the northeast of the island, increased by 71 per cent. Hotel searches also increased by 60 per cent to the tourist resort of nearby Mellieha and by 41 per cent in Bugibba, which is located adjacent to Qawra.
Perhaps most significantly, travel interest increased by 31 per cent to the capital of Valletta. Prince William stayed at San Anton Palace in nearby Attard and spent time at the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Auberge de Castille and Upper Barrakka Gardens, all located in Valletta. The Duke also took a boat tour of Valletta’s Grand Harbour.
