World finance leaders meet in Cairns

The Cairns Convention Centre coordinated the delivery of audio visual and IT services in conjunction with the G20 Task Force and also housed the 300 strong global media delegation in purpose built offices.

The eyes of the economic world were focused on the Cairns Convention Centre last week as host of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. Topics included fiscal and monetary policy, investment and infrastructure, financial regulation, tax and reforming global institutions.

In an open letter to the Cairns community Joe Hockey, Treasurer of Australia and Chair of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting, said, “Cairns was a standout host city, delivering world-class service in a world heritage environment with a friendly and engaged community. I commend you for seizing this opportunity to remind the world that Cairns is an ideal location for international events and a showcase for Australia’s favourite natural and cultural qualities. You have won over a thousand new advocates for Cairns and Far North Queensland.”

The Cairns Convention Centre coordinated the delivery of audio visual and IT services in conjunction with the G20 Task Force and also housed the 300 strong global media delegation in purpose built offices. Everything was seamlessly delivered via direct input through the Convention Centre’s highly specialised IT backbone.

To enhance the delegate experience the Centre’s team built backdrops and signage allowing computer generated images of the rainforest, reef and outback to be projected through G20 logos. These were placed adjacent to the screen used in the main meeting room and provided a glimpse of the local region.

Catering to the world’s finance ministers and central bank governors allowed the food and beverage team at the Cairns Convention Centre to showcase Tropical North Queensland’s wonderful local produce whilst giving visitors a taste of Australia. The delegates were able to experience the warm winter weather whilst enjoying the Centre’s unique brand of tropical hospitality.

Ross Steele, General Manager, Cairns Convention Centre, said, “It was an honour to be the host venue for the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting, a globally important event that showcased the outstanding business events infrastructure and service delivery our city and our Convention Centre is renowned for.”

Hosting the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting has capped off a year of outstanding success for the Cairns Convention Centre after receiving the AIPC APEX award for World’s Best Congress Centre and hosting what has been billed as the “best Australian Tourism Exchange in its 35 year history”.
