Market experts meet to discuss future of regional aviation

An informed line of panellists along with ERA members will debate the evolution of regional aviation and its future role in the European transport market, how it will work alongside network and low-cost carriers and whether there is still a market for niche point-to-point airlines.

Europe’s regional aviation market experts are meeting in Barcelona between 30 September and 2 October for the European Regions Airline Association (ERA’s) 27th annual General Assembly (GA). Always a popular event, more than 400 delegates will join together to debate the crucial issues that are impacting the future of regional aviation in Europe.

“General assembly in Barcelona promises to be a fantastic event,” says Simon McNamara, ERA’s director general. “ERA represents the entire spectrum of the aviation sector with 50 airlines, 21 airports, 10 manufacturers and nearly 100 suppliers in membership. This event gives them an ideal opportunity to network, exchange ideas, do business and discuss how best to work together towards a successful future.”

Speakers and panellists at this year’s event include keynotes from Tony Tyler, director general and CEO of IATA as well as Will Whitehorn, former president of Virgin Galactic. An informed line of panellists along with ERA members will debate the evolution of regional aviation and its future role in the European transport market, how it will work alongside network and low-cost carriers and whether there is still a market for niche point-to-point airlines.

Panellists include Per G Braathen, chairman, Braganza, Roger Cohen, president of the US Regional Airline Association (RAA) and Maurizio Merlo, CEO, Etihad Regional operated by Darwin Airline.

“ERA members provide passenger, freight and mail services, transporting over 45m passengers each year on 960,000 flights through over 1,200 point-to-point direct routes. The association generates more than 280,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs within Europe, and contributes in the region of 47bn euros to Europe’s GDP,” explains McNamara. “This contribution to the social and economic development of Europe must be recognised and supported. ERA’s annual general assembly is an idea opportunity to come together to discuss how we can ensure the sector has a successful future.”

The highly respected ERA annual airline and airport awards are announced at the prestigious gala dinner on 1 October and the event closes on 2 October with the annual general meeting where a number of new board member appointments will be announced.
Accredited media are invited to attend the conference, press conferences and media-specific receptions and organise one-on-one interviews with the expert market commentators attending the event.
