New multifunctional parking building for Amsterdam RAI

A unique feature is the first floor which can also be used as an exhibition space due to its double height. The RAI parking garage is expected to be delivered in April 2016.

With a multifunctional building offering parking for 900 cars, Amsterdam RAI is taking another step towards optimising its use of the RAI complex in the Zuidas business district of Amsterdam. The extension with a seven-storey, 26-metre-high parking structure brings the capacity of Amsterdam RAI back to the level of 4,000 parking spaces, as is required for large international, multi-day events. A unique feature is the first floor which can also be used as an exhibition space due to its double height. The RAI parking garage is expected to be delivered in April 2016.

The parking expansion has been a key goal for Amsterdam RAI for some time. As a result of developments in the Zuidas district, the parking capacity of the RAI has been more than halved to just 3,000 spaces over the past decade. To function as an international convention centre the RAI requires at least 4,000 spaces. Centralising the parking spaces on the RAI premises will strengthen the position of Amsterdam RAI, stimulate smooth traffic flows and prevent congestion around the complex.

Parking and exhibiting
The new RAI parking garage was designed by Mels Crouwel of Benthem Crouwel Architects. The initial design sketches show a streamlined, rectangular building with the upper-storey access points on the exterior as the most eye-catching architectonic elements. Another unique feature is the double height of the first floor (7.20 metres), allowing it to be used as buffer space for cargo transport and exhibition space during large-scale events.

Investments for international multi-day events
Over the past decade, Amsterdam RAI has invested over € 185 million in high-quality, modern facilities for international, multi-day events, which have a considerable economic value for the Amsterdam region. After the Amtrium building, the RAI parking garage is the second project to be realised from the (Spatial) Future Vision RAI plan, developed by the RAI in partnership with the Municipality of Amsterdam (Zuidas Amsterdam Development Office). The new building is due to be ready for use in April 2016.
