The sharing economy hits the slopes with HomeExchange.com

With a 36% rise in mountainside properties, home exchanges are a new trend for ski holidays on a budget.

HomeExchange.com is already popular among families travelling on a budget in the summer months. But did you know it’s just as good for winter skiing holidays too? It’s yet another example of how the collaborative economy is reaching the mainstream.

Owners of second homes, chalets, cabins and apartments at the mountain are realising they’re sitting on underused assets. Home exchanging opens numerous exciting opportunities to travel for free, as an alternative or additional option to hotels or holiday rentals. Non-simultaneous exchanges allow flexibility on dates: like this home exchanger who is swapping to Breckenridge, Colorado in December, so his counterpart can enjoy the historic beauty of Cambridge. Visitors like this are greatly appreciated by local businesses too.

“The number of HomeExchange.com mountain homes has grown by 36% in two years,” says Keghan Hurst, Director of Global Community, “more than half of these are families who live in these places year round. They don’t necessarily consider renting out their homes, but home exchange is a fantastic way for them to exchange with other families for winter breaks in comfortable conditions without spending a penny.”

Home exchanger Peter Allen said: “Our two children have learnt to ski in wonderful surroundings thanks to HomeExchange.com. Our family home in Cambridge appeals to all kinds of people wanting to exchange so you needn’t worry about thinking if you have got the right home to exchange. People looking to swap are very interested in sampling life in a typically English home.”

Sledges, snowboards, skis, snow bikes often come as part of the exchange, further reducing the hassle and expense of a typical winter holiday. “These freebie extras are the secret ingredients to many a happy home exchange. Our members love the flexibility this brings: the freedom of no rental paperwork and both parties willing and able to avoid peak travel times, tailoring the duration of the stay to their mutual convenience. When you’ve got young children in tow, having a couple of sledges in the house can be the difference between holiday hell and holiday heaven” adds Hurst.
