TUI Travel PLC leads the way with a ‘perfect 100’ for carbon reporting

Company awarded top possible score for climate change reporting and transparency.

LONDON – TUI Travel PLC has received a perfect score of 100 for the depth and quality of the climate change information it has disclosed to investors and the global marketplace through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the international investor-led NGO that drives sustainable economies. Recognised as a leader, TUI Travel will be featured in the UK Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI), released today in the CDP UK Corporate Environmental Report 2014. TUI Travel’s score places it joint first place amongst the FTSE 350 for its approach to carbon reporting and transparency.

TUI Travel is the only Travel & Leisure Company to feature in the 2014 CDLI and top of the Consumer Discretionary Sector; it is featured in the CDLI for the seventh year running; and this year saw it beat its previously highest score of 92 in 2013. It also received an A- for its Climate Performance banding, up from a B in 2013, recognising its strong performance in reducing absolute carbon emissions.

TUI Travel has earned leadership status by submitting climate change information for independent assessment against CDP’s widely-respected scoring methodology and this information is in the public domain for all stakeholders to read. Company disclosures to CDP are marked out of a total of 100, of which TUI Travel received full marks for the first time. High scores indicate the provision of robust climate data, upon which decisions that will catalyse progress towards low carbon economies can be made. The index highlights companies that provide a high level of transparency in their disclosure of climate-related information.

This is the company’s latest accolade in carbon reporting. Earlier this month, TUI Travel climbed two places to fourth position in Carbon Clear’s annual ranking of the FTSE 100 companies. For a second year in a row it was the only travel company to feature in the top 20.

TUI Travel’s latest Sustainable Holidays Report revealed it has saved £28 million in environmental efficiencies since 2012, while significantly reducing absolute TUI Travel airlines’ carbon emissions by 15% in 5 years and relative carbon emissions by 9.3% in the same period – now some of the most efficient airlines in the world.

Johan Lundgren, Deputy Chief Executive, said, “We are thrilled to have been awarded full marks in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index. We are committed to providing a lasting legacy of reducing our carbon emissions and as a business, we wholeheartedly recognise our responsibility and the importance of accurate and transparent carbon reporting to all our stakeholders.”

Paul Simpson, chief executive officer of CDP, commented, “Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise and we face steep financial risk if we do not mitigate them. The need for data on corporate climate change impacts and strategies to reduce them has never been greater. For this reason we congratulate those businesses that have achieved a position on CDP’s Climate Disclosure Leadership Index. These companies are responding to the ever-growing demand for environmental accountability and should inspire others to follow suit.”
