A new conferencing centre in the heart of Glasgow

With its central location and vast access links, the Technology and Innovation Centre is a hub for world-leading research, enabling close collaboration between academics, business, industry and the public sector.

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau attended EIBTM in Barcelona last week to officially introduce a new multi-million pound conference centre in the heart of the city.

The University of Strathclyde’s state-of-the-art Technology and Innovation Centre is a welcome addition to Glasgow’s extensive venue portfolio.

With its central location and vast access links, the Technology and Innovation Centre is a hub for world-leading research, enabling close collaboration between academics, business, industry and the public sector.

The building has been created with a number global research areas in mind, tying in with the city’s overall strategic focus to attract meetings in sectors including; energy, manufacturing, health and the development of future cities.

In the past year alone (2013/2014) the city has delivered 58 conferences in these key areas, generating more than £16.8million to the local economy.

And the future of these industries is just as bright for Glasgow with confirmed winning bids to host 186 conferences in these sectors up until 2022, securing a boost in the region of £200million to the local economy.

The building has increased Glasgow’s capacity with a number of options available to conference organisers looking to host their event in the city with dedicated meeting spaces located across three of its nine floors.

The main tiered auditorium has a seating capacity of up to 450 people with varied format options. The state-of-the-art design allows the auditorium to be sub-divided into three self-contained and soundproof areas, seating 150 in each; or alternatively, one tiered auditorium for up to 300 delegates and one flat floored theatre style area for 150 guests.

The building also includes an additional spacious auditorium with a seating capacity of 150, which is kitted out with the latest technology for the highest specification in audio visual equipment including video and audio streaming, touch screen control panels and retractable projection screens.

The world-class lay-out has been created with versatility in mind to attract meetings of various sizes. For those looking to hire out event space on a smaller scale, the flexibility of the facility is continued to the top floor. Eight seminar or breakout rooms, with an attractive outlook via the floor-to-ceiling windows, can accommodate up to 35 people in each space.

Four of the seminar rooms have removable walls to create two large seminar rooms for up to 70 in each.

Additionally, conference and meetings organisers will have full use of catering space, a dedicated reception manned with staff as well as options to dress the area with exhibition stands and posters.

With its striking design features, the building’s aesthetics complement the city’s world renowned iconic architecture.

Aileen Crawford, Head of Conventions at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “We’re delighted to introduce the new state-of-the art Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde.

“Glasgow’s profile is continuing to shine in the global spotlight after our most historically influential year and introducing our new conference centre is building on our conventions success to-date.

“This is truly a unique facility with a collaborative ethos between industry and academia whilst linking domestic and international associations.

“Aside from the building’s aesthetically pleasing exterior and interior, it will increase Glasgow’s capacity, capability and credibility; positioning us as the perfect fit for global conference organisers.”

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal of the University and Chair of Glasgow Economic Leadership, said: “The city of Glasgow has an enviable reputation for research and innovation, and here at the University of Strathclyde, we are proud of our track record in creating successful partnerships between business and industry, policy makers and academia.

“Glasgow has become a conference powerhouse in recent years and we are delighted that our new Technology and Innovation Centre in the heart of the city is already attracting international meetings of the highest calibre.”

More than £90 million has been invested in the Technology and Innovation Centre to create a world-leading facility. The launch of the building at the start of 2015 will mark the end of an extraordinary 12 months in the city after hosting a wealth of conferences and major events whilst opening world-class infrastructure throughout Glasgow including the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the award-winning SSE Hydro.
