Out of the top 100 hotel destinations, York fared the best, in position 35 with an index of 82.25%. Edinburgh and Liverpool followed close behind, in positions 45 and 48 respectively. Hotels in York were praised for their character, comfortable rooms, good food and excellent service.

LONDON – Sanya in China has the most highly rated hotels in the world, according to the annual Reputation Ranking released by hotel comparison website trivago.co.uk. While York, Edinburgh and Liverpool are in the top 50, Manchester and Birmingham are ranked near the bottom – and London failed to make the list.

The list of 100 cities, which is published at the beginning of each year, ranks global destinations according to the reputation of their hotels. Each destination is given an index, which is based on over 140 million hotel reviews and ratings aggregated from over 200 booking sites worldwide. In order to make the comparison fair, only hotels with at least 60 reviews and cities with at least 130 hotels are included.

Sanya in China boasts the most liked hotels in the world, with an index of 86.94%. The city on Hainan Island has become a popular tourist destination in recent years, due to its tropical climate. The destination contains a large number of high rise resort hotels, which are typically praised for their value for money, excellent facilities, friendly service and beautiful location.

Value for money seems to unite these destinations, with eight of the top ten boasting an average price per night of less than £100 during 2014. Hanoi, in second place, has an average price per night of just £39. This suggests good value plays a key role in determining hotel popularity, with guests more likely to rate a hotel favourably if they feel like a good deal has been achieved.
