Major events attracting tourism at a Global Scale

Between 2012 and 2014 the amount of people consuming events while travelling abroad has increased by 82%. Americans traveling to Europe show a wide preference for Champions League, which is among the most competitive and prestigious interclub soccer championships.

A recent trend suggests a global increase in the amount of people traveling abroad to consume big-name events. An infographic developed by Ticketbis, an international platform for buying and selling tickets, is a visual representation of all its cross-border ticket sales in the last 3 years showing us which events are being consumed most by tourists in each country.

International sales figures gathered from the Ticketbis platform show a 53% increase from 2012 to 2013 and a 61% increase from 2013 to 2014. This represents a total increase of 82% between 2012 and 2014.

The findings also point towards a trend suggesting travelers are more interested in the events typically enjoyed by locals and that are unique to the country they are visiting. In the U.S, one of the most popular destinations for consuming events, tourists show a preference for the NFL, NBA, and Broadway musicals.

Americans traveling to Europe show a wide preference for Champions League, which is among the most competitive and prestigious interclub soccer championships. Specifically in the UK, they have been attending Premier League games mostly those that include participation of top-tier clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool. The  “El Clasico” games between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are also a favourite among U.S tourists visiting Spain. Soccer events in Europe are not only favoured by Americans, but also Latin Americans and Asians visiting the continent.

Regarding music events, the 2013 Rolling Stones show at Hyde Park in London, the very city the band emerged out of, had 44.8% of its ticket sales outside the UK on Ticketbis.com. Such finding may suggest that  tourists are  increasingly finding a cultural significance in major events particular to the country they are visiting.

Other events which attracted considerable portion of international sales in the past 3 years include 2014 Fifa World Cup games in Brazil, the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon South Korea, 2013 Rugby Championship matchup between Australia and New Zealand, Roger Waters The Wall concerts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, UK.
