IEM in Euro-Setting sparks UK Government interest

The session, titled ”The Institute of Event Management: The UK Model in a European Landscape” is the opening session at the EFAPCO Day taking place at the King George Hotel, Athens, this Friday, March 13.

A conference session analysing ways in which the UK’s newly-created Institute of Event Management could provide a pan-European model has attracted interest from the British Embassy in the meeting’s host city of Athens.

The session, titled ”The Institute of Event Management: The UK Model in a European Landscape” is the opening session at the EFAPCO Day taking place at the King George Hotel, Athens, this Friday, March 13. It forms part of a two-day event organised jointly by EFAPCO, the European Federation of the Associations of PCOs, and its Greek member association HAPCO.

“I am delighted that Caterina Drossopoulou, Senior Trade Advisor with UK Trade & Investment based at the British Embassy in Athens will be attending our keynote session at the ThinkFORUM,” said Susan Spibey, Chair of the IEM’s Executive Board.

The creation of the IEM will be outlined by Susan Spibey, who is also EFAPCO’s Adviser on Professional Standards. The session will include a Skype Q&A with Ben Gittus and Stephen Studd, Directors of EOSE Services located in the UK. EOSE, the European Observatory for Sport and Employment, has members in 18 countries managing EU and international projects in the sports management and leisure sector.

The ESOE recognises the IEM as a complementary professional body facilitating workforce development and change in a closely related sector. Partnership with the EOSE will help IEM to explore the potential for European activity.

Prague-based EFAPCO President, Ivo Miksa, said: “We have met with the newly-formed Institute of Event Management to work out ways in which the model could be developed as a European organisation with the ability to qualify for interesting educational and industry-value related activities under the Erasmus plus educational programme.”

EFAPCO has already devoted time and energy to development of a European Observatory research programme, devised by Sam van de Kerckhof, a leading member of EFAPCO’s Belgian member association BAPCO, analysing the meetings, conference and events industry’s contributions towards development of education programmes, professional standards and economic benefits.

The ThinkFORUM progamme also features a session looking at the differences that exist between Europe’s various national PCO associations in the context of the challenges and opportunities they will face in the future.

Delegates will also examine the ways in which the EFPIA Transparency Code is being implemented and the impact it will have on PCOs organising medical and pharmaceutical meetings.

Susan Spibey added: “Many facets of our working lives – from accountants to doctors, lawyers to teachers – have been professionalised over many decades, centuries even.

“In comparison “event management” is still in its infancy. The meetings and events sector has mushroomed over the last three decades without a formal structure or a plan for professional development. Over the past ten years universities across Europe have developed a vast range of courses in event management with others devising a variety of applied courses, all operating without a clear strategy for continuing professional development.

“We hope the IEM can harness all of this interest in our sector and provide a co-ordinated structure that has the potential to professionalise our profession,” she added.

“I am looking forward to exploring ways in which our progress might encourage the development of a European network or similar Institutes in EFAPCO member countries.”

Caterina Drossopoulou said: “With professional advisers both within the UK and across more than 100 international markets, UK Trade & Investment is the British Government Department that helps UK-based companies and organisations succeed in the global economy and assists overseas bodies to bring their own high-quality investment to the UK.”
