Transaero calls for lifting ban on use of personal electronic devices on board aircraft during take-off and landing

The use of PEDs on board aircraft is still prohibited in Russia by the Order of the Department of Air Transport of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, issued as early as 1995.

MOSCOW – Transaero Airlines has sent the proposal to the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation to cancel the Order prohibiting the use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) during take-off and landing on board aircraft.

According to the new researches of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Federal Aviation Administration of the US, signals of mobile phones do not cause interference with aircraft systems. In that context, the current global trend is towards lifting the ban to switch on PEDs, in particular mobile phones, on board aircraft. Airlines are allowed to determine if devices can be used on board aircraft during take-off and landing.

Meanwhile, the use of PEDs on board aircraft is still prohibited in Russia by the Order of the Department of Air Transport of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, issued as early as 1995.

In response to Transaero’s request, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation has officially notified that the mentioned Order # DV-137 of the Department of Air Transport dated December 9, 1995, has not been submitted for state registration.

“Transaero is constantly striving to ensure maximum comfort for our passengers during flights. This is exactly the reason why the airline has launched an initiative to cancel this clearly outdated ban. This will not affect flight safety in any way. The Russian regulations will be brought in compliance with the world standards,” said Dmitry Stolyarov, First Deputy CEO Transaero Airlines.
