New hangar constructed at Budapest Airport for Wizz Air

No fewer than 68 reinforced concrete piles have been put down in the area of the new hangar to be built at Budapest Airport–the Wizz Air maintenance/repair hangar project has officially entered the construction phase.

Budapest Airport has begun work on the brand-new hangar for Wizz Air, which commences operation of its maintenance base  in Budapest from September this year. The general contractor of the new hangar construction is Market Epito Zrt. Heavy machines once again started to roar at Ferenc Liszt Airport on Friday 17 April, between the two large maintenance and repair hangars.

No fewer than 68 reinforced concrete piles have been put down in the area of the new hangar to be built at Budapest Airport–the Wizz Air maintenance/repair hangar project has officially entered the construction phase. The new hangar, directly opening to the maintenance apron, will be erected by Market EpitoZrt between the existing maintenance hangars operated by Lufthansa Technik and Aeroplex by August, with Wizz Air expecting to move into the new facility in September. The 15-year lease contract for the new hangar was signed by the airline and Budapest Airport last June.

The 2,000m² hangar and 200m² service facility will accommodate a single aircraft. In the course of designing the hangar, it was also taken into consideration that in the years ahead the Wizz Air fleet may be extended with Airbus A 321 neo aircraft already featuring ‘sharklets’, with a body that is almost 7 metres longer than that of the currently operated A 320 variety.

From this spring onwards, Wizz Air is using Budapest Airport as a base for a fleet of nine aircraft, and line maintenance and minor repairs required in the course of daily operation will be performed in the new hangar.

“This year, one of our largest development projects is the new hangar to be built for Wizz Air, with a total investment of close to one billion HUF. Wizz Air is the biggest airline partner of Budapest Airport in terms of passenger traffic, and the new hangar is another step to wards further strengthening the presence of Wizz on-airport, and the aircraft maintenance business in general” said Rene Droese, Property Director, Budapest Airport. He added, “They operate their aviation unit, their Crew Centre, their flight simulator, and their training centre at our airport already. The current project shows that we are committed to continued growth and creating new jobs at Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The new hangar makes it possible for Wizz Air to run an even smoother operation here, enabling it to perform high-quality line maintenance activities in Budapest.”
