Hahn Air now supports airlines with interline EMDs

The new service is currently available in the Global Distribution System Amadeus, other GDSs will follow over the coming months.

DREIEICH – Hahn Air, the scheduled German airline specialised in sales solutions for airlines and travel agencies, now supports Interline Electronic Miscellaneous Documents (IEMDs). The new service is currently available in the Global Distribution System Amadeus, other GDSs will follow over the coming months. The first partner to benefit from Hahn Air’s interline EMDs is Adria Airways. The Slovenian national carrier now gains incremental revenue with the sale of ancillary services in up to 190 markets.

The Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD) is an IATA standard document sold via GDS to enable the indirect sale, fulfilment and tracking of usage of ancillary airline services in one seamless process. However, airlines can only sell their EMDs in markets where they have joined the local settlement system (BSP). With an interline-agreement, partner carriers can now sell their services via Hahn Air’s HR-169 Interline Electronic Miscellaneous Document (IEMD) to 95,000 travel agencies in 190 markets.

“Today it’s all about customisation, as passengers demand amenities tailored to their needs”, says Steve Knackstedt, Vice President of the Airline Business Group at Hahn Air. “Therefore EMDs have already become increasingly important for airlines, customers and travel agencies. With our IEMD solution, we now offer the tool to sell them in Amadeus worldwide.”

Over the past years, ancillary revenue has become one of the fastest growing revenue sources for the airline industry. According to the consultancy IdeaWorks, figures have risen by almost 1,200 per cent from 2007 to 2013 alone. For 2014, the consultancy projects a total of nearly USD 50 Billion generated from ancillary fees.

“With interline EMDs, airlines can dramatically increase their ancillary revenue as travel agents worldwide will be able to upsell their services directly via the GDSs”, adds Knackstedt. Hahn Air aims to implement interline EMDs for more partner airlines throughout the year and will offer the new service via all GDSs by end of 2015.
