Would you pay for a bag of peanuts on a plane?

More consumers prefer a base fare with “a la carte” ancillary offerings (49%) than they do a more expensive bundled fare that includes checked baggage, meals, drinks, and in-flight entertainment (32%).

Switchfly, a SaaS platform for travel commerce powering travel, shopping and loyalty programs around the world, releases new research on both consumers’ and airlines’ perspectives on air travel commerce and services.

The key findings on the customers’ perspectives included:

  • More consumers prefer a base fare with “a la carte” ancillary offerings (49%) than they do a more expensive bundled fare that includes checked baggage, meals, drinks, and in-flight entertainment (32%).
  • Most airline customers regularly pay a la carte fees when traveling by air (69%). Checked bags (28%), preferred seating (22%), and in-light meals (22%) are their most common choices.
  • When given the option of a no-frills base fare, a mid-tier fare with added ancillaries, or a higher priced bundled fare with even more ancillaries, airline consumers prefer the mid-priced bundled fare. This is true for both two-hour and four-hour flights.

The key findings on the Airlines’ perspectives included:

  • Airlines are almost unanimous (97.9%) in agreement that it’s important that their ecommerce platform support the selling of air ancillaries, with 62.5% believing it to be “mission critical.”
  • Nearly three-quarters (72.9%) of airlines presently sell air ancillaries through their ecommerce platform, and offer these items and services both pre- AND post-booking.
  • For these airlines already selling air ancillaries, the most popular offerings are baggage (62.9%) and upgraded seating (48.6%).
  • Nearly two-thirds (63.8%) of all airlines are at least somewhat willing to replace their existing ecommerce site to improve user experience and their ability to offer air ancillaries.
