Survey reveals on-the-road habits for U.S. travelers

New survey by Fairfield Inn & Suites reveals significant differences in maintaining work/life balance home vs. traveling. For many people, including business travelers, being amazing means being able to stick to a productive routine, even on the road.

BETHESDA, MD. – It takes tremendous skill to balance life’s demands and juggle the tasks one needs to accomplish every day, especially when on the road, according to a new survey by Fairfield Inn & Suites. The March 2015 survey of 1,400 U.S. adults reports that while 50 percent of Americans claim to lead a balanced life, only 35 percent of adults feel their life is balanced while traveling.

The survey was conducted in celebration of the hotel brand’s National Amazing Month campaign, which encourages people to thank those in their lives that help them maintain balance and nominate them for a trip to Bali.

“Life at work, on the road and at home is a juggling act which takes tremendous skill,” said Shruti Buckley, vice president and global brand manager, Fairfield Inn & Suites. “National Amazing Month is a campaign we are passionate about because it allows us to shine a light on the importance of keeping balance while on the road and taking note of the people and things that help you do so.”

Keeping Balance on the Road is Hard for Travelers
For many people, including business travelers, being amazing means being able to stick to a productive routine, even on the road. Travelers report challenges in the following areas:

  • Eating less healthy: 59 percent
  • Working out less: 57 percent
  • Experiencing more stress: 49 percent
  • Sleeping less: 47 percent

Travelers Want Personalization and Perfection
It’s rare that a leisure vacation or business trip will go without some mishaps here and there, but respondents note that there are some things travel companies can do to make their trip more amazing, including:

  • Receiving an upgrade like a first class seat or a better room at a hotel: 89 percent
  • Experiencing top-notch service (i.e. hotel staff that went above and beyond expectations, etc.): 84 percent
  • Seamless trip/no travel mishaps: 79 percent
  • Personalized service/the hotel anticipated all travel needs in advance: 71 percent

Business Travelers Value Technology More
Business travelers are more likely than leisure travelers to value technology while on the road. 53 percent of business travelers indicate that while traveling, discovering/using technology that increases efficiency would be amazing, compared to 47 percent of leisure travelers. Additionally, significantly more business travelers (73 percent) than leisure travelers (59 percent) find technology (having mobile devices with them at all times) to be an important factor in staying balanced while traveling.
