UK travel businesses comment on how El Nino will affect business in winter 2015

While still in its early stages, if El Nino follows its usual patterns it could wreak havoc across the globe bringing freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall to the UK and Europe.

Following recent news that the weather phenomenon known as El Nino is occurring in the Pacific Ocean, experts are predicting a cold winter for the UK and Europe. While still in its early stages, if El Nino follows its usual patterns it could wreak havoc across the globe bringing freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall to the UK and Europe.

British travel companies are bracing themselves for the potential onset of unusual weather and predict how it might affect them:

Dan Yates from Pitchup.com said: “The last time El Nino occurred was in 2010 when Pitchup.com was in its first year and was restricted by a product that was mostlycamping related. This time however, outdoor holidays have come on a long way and we now offer accommodation in heated insulated lodges, pods and holiday homes. Therefore we’re not really anticipating that this will have a negative impact on the business.  Instead I believe we’ll see strong growth in people using our site to find accommodation with open fires where they can be out in the countryside enjoying the snowfall, knowing they can return to warm and cosy holiday accommodation. I imagine our Scottish and Lake District clients will also enjoy a boost as holidaymakers seek out ski breaks right here in the UK”.

Spencer Groves, Head of Product & Marketing at destination specialist letsgo2.com said: “Potentially, weather across Brits’ winter sun holiday hot spots could be affected by El Nino with Peru, Brazil, West Africa and even Southwest USA likely to experience much wetter conditions. If the UK does endure an exceptionally cold winter, holidaymakers can still escape to warmer climes. We have a wide variety of destinations which are less likely to be affected, such as Thailand and Malaysia in the Far East, Oman and Jordan in the Middle East and the Caribbean.”

Craig Burton, Managing Director of Ski Solutions commented: “We offer ski holidays across Europe, North America and beyond. With sales already up 20% across the board for the 2015/16 season, we’ve seen no evidence to suggest that consumers are being deterred from travelling on account of the predicted El Nino, quite the opposite. We’ve seen over the years that British skiers are fairly resilient as far as travel is concerned, when faced with political and environmental uncertainties. As such, we anticipate another very good winter ahead, whatever the weather brings.”

Michele Caggianese, Manager at The Rib Room Bar & Restaurant in London’s Knightsbridge said: “Whatever the weather we offer refreshing seasonal and classic cocktails. When the temperature outside dips, try our famous Rib Room Blazer. The spirits in this renowned cocktail are ignited and blended through being poured in a theatrical display of liquid fire. It ignites the senses, leaving you feeling warm inside and out”.
