Hahn Air releases whitepaper on insolvency insurance for air tickets

Hahn Air, the scheduled German airline specialising in distribution services for other airlines, proposes mandatory and complimentary insolvency insurance for all airline tickets sold within the EU.

DREIEICH – Hahn Air released its current whitepaper Passenger protection against airline insolvency. The whitepaper by Jorg Troester, Head of Corporate Strategy, Industry and Government Affairs at Hahn Air, has been sent to members of the European Union’s Parliament and Commission and other major decision makers within the EU’s aviation industry to contribute ideas to the ongoing decision regarding airline insolvency insurance regulations.

Hahn Air, the scheduled German airline specialising in distribution services for other airlines, proposes mandatory and complimentary insolvency insurance for all airline tickets sold within the EU. The airline is currently the only carrier in the EU to provide free insolvency insurance on all of their HR-169 tickets. This is also valid for interline tickets for Hahn Air’s more than 300 air and rail partners issued via indirect distribution through 95,000 travel agencies.

The debate about airline insolvency regulation has become increasingly relevant in wake of the Commission’s recent European Package Travel Directive, which now classifies click through scenarios as travel packages and therefore insures passengers’ flights against insolvency.

Hahn Air is very pleased to see that the EU is taking another step to protect passengers against airline insolvency,” says Troester. “Still, we see that not all passengers enjoy the same level of protection. For example, seat-only passengers do not enjoy comparable insurance; which is why Hahn Air is in favour of a mandatory insolvency protection model. We believe this essential in strengthening the trust between airlines and travellers and in achieving fair market conditions for all carriers, independant of the booking channel or the origin of the airline.

One of the key arguments of Hahn Air’s whitepaper is that every airline should be able to provide complimentary insolvency insurance. If an airline is unable to obtain insolvency insurance on their own, Hahn Air suggests a partnership with a ticketing provider or another airline that already has sufficient insurance in place. The partner airline would act as the validating carrier and would guarantee sufficient insolvency protection.

Since 2010, Hahn Air has sold more than 21 million insolvency-safe tickets that included the complimentary insolvency insurance Securtix. It guarantees reimbursement in the event of insolvency of the operating carrier or railway company and includes benefits for stranded passengers such as a refund for the unused part of the ticket, as well as costs for accommodation and meals.
