LONDON – Travel interest to UK coastal destinations has increased by up to 64 per cent following the heatwave, according to new data from hotel comparison site trivago.co.uk. Hotel searches made during the hottest days (Monday 29th June – Wednesday 1st July) were compared to searches made the previous week (Monday 22nd – Wednesday 24th June).

Popularity ranking ranks UK coastal destinations based on the number of searches made from June 29 – July 1, for all future travel. Average Price is the average price per night for a standard double room during July 2015, taken from the trivago Hotel Price Index. Percentage difference shows the difference in searches made from June 29 – July 1, compared to June 22 – June 24.
Based on hotel searches made between Monday 29th June and Wednesday 1st July for all future travel, Bournemouth is the UK’s favourite seaside resort, followed by Blackpool, Brighton, Scarborough and Whitby.
The most expensive coastal destination this July is St Ives, where an overnight stay will cost an average of £160. This is followed by Poole (£140), Portsmouth (£127), Newquay (£117) and Brighton (£116).
The cheapest prices can be found in Blackpool (average of £60 per night during July 2015), followed by Skegness (£62), Scarborough (£79), Weston-super-Mare and Southend-on-Sea (both £82).
Southend-on-Sea also experienced the greatest increase in travel interest, with hotel searches increasing by 64 per cent over a one week period. This was followed by Skegness (45 per cent), Weston-super-Mare (42 per cent), Bournemouth (35 per cent) and Tenby (30 per cent).
Almost all of the most popular coastal destinations experienced an increase in searches during the heatwave, with only Plymouth (down by 10 per cent) and Portsmouth (down 7 per cent) experiencing significant decreases.

The early heatwave seems to have prompted optimism for a hot UK summer, with holidaymakers opting for a ‘staycation’ and searching for popular seaside resorts within the UK. From Whitby to Torquay, with hotel prices starting from just £60 a night, it is great to see holidaymakers making the most of the range of affordable staycation destinations.”
