London City Airport (LCY) has won the All-Party Parliamentary Corporate Responsibility Group (APCRG)’s inaugural Business Champion award.
Nominated by the Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP (East Ham), LCY was chosen by a Parliamentary judging panel which looked at nominations from MPs representing constituencies across the UK.
The award was given to LCY in recognition of its ‘investment in the local community; its commitment to providing pathways into work for unemployed residents; its work with schools and universities; and its work with West Ham United Football Club to promote healthy lifestyles, among other issues’ and was described as ‘an exemplar of corporate responsibility’.
Since opening in 1987 London City Airport has developed a wealth of relationships with local communities and contributed significantly to the regeneration of East London. 70% of employees are from within five miles of the airport and 30% are from the London Borough of Newham.
LCY is committed to helping young people achieve educational excellence, creating pathways into employment, investing in the local community, and being a beacon for business suitability.
Accepting the award at the Houses of Parliament, LCY’s Chief Executive Officer Declan Collier said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award. Creating opportunities for our community is in our DNA and, moving forward, we hope to do even more to help young people reach their potential and to create opportunities to improve their future.
“For an airport to succeed and to grow it needs to be seen as a part of the community that surrounds it, investing in the future of the community as it invests in its own future. This award demonstrates our commitment to that ethos.”
The Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow said: “I congratulate London City Airport on winning the 2015 National Responsible Business Champion award. It was described by Stephen Timms, a former Corporate Responsibility Minister, as an ‘exemplar of corporate responsibility’.
“He cited its investment in the local community; its commitment to providing pathways into work for unemployed residents; its work with schools and universities; and its work with West Ham United Football Club to promote healthy lifestyles, among other issues.”
APCRG Co-Chair Jonathan Djanogly, MP for Huntingdon, said: “We introduced this award because we wanted to encourage MPs to look closely at the overall impact local companies are having in their constituencies and to give them an opportunity to raise awareness of their most responsible companies.
“It is clear from the nominations we received that MPs are in close touch with local employers and, as you would expect, have a good feel for the overall contribution they are making to their local community.
“The standard of entries from MPs was high and London City Airport has done very well indeed to emerge as the winner this year. Stephen Timms made a compelling case for the company on the basis of its impact in his constituency and we are delighted as a Group to draw attention to the important role London City Airport plays in the east London community.”
