Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine reopens March 2015

With impressive momentum of first Michelin Star and new Spa and guest rooms coming July.

SARDON DE DUERO, SPAIN – Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, the newly restored, historic hotel located in a 12th century abbey surrounded by vineyards in Spain’s Duero winegrowing region, will reopen March 2nd with impressive momentum for a successful 2015 and beyond – driven by earning its first Michelin Star, the addition of a world-class spa and eight exquisite new guest rooms slated to open in July, and crafting specialty guest experiences such as mushroom foraging on the hotel’s medieval estate.

“Our vision for LeDomaine from the beginning has been to create a hotel that stands apart for its combination of historic atmosphere and precedent-setting guest facilities and experiences, and all of the components of this extraordinary property are coming together,” said Andres Araya, Managing Director.

LeDomaine has announced that when it re-opens in March, after closing for three months for the holidays and to accelerate construction of the spa and guest rooms, it will offer a starting room rate in 2015 of $415 as well as a variety of packages including spa, gourmet, romance and special guest experience programs that take advantage of the diversity of the local terrain. On the ‘Mycological Experience,’ guests hunt for wild mushrooms in local forests and dine on gourmet dishes prepared with the freshly picked fungi.

El Santuario, Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine’s new spa, will open its doors July 2015 featuring 10,000-sq.-ft. of ultra-luxurious facilities, a ground-breaking bespoke vinotherapy concept, the spa industry’s first “Spa Sommelier,” and the highest levels of guest service and individualization. The 900-year-old abbey’s former stables are being transformed into this nurturing and innovative sanctuary of holistic healing and wellness. Eight spacious and exquisitely appointed new guest rooms, which will have direct spa access, are also part of the stables transformation.

In November 2014, the hotel’s Refectorio restaurant and Head Chef Pablo Montero received their first Michelin Star. Chef Montero trained in some of the finest international restaurants including Mugaritz, the Two Michelin Star restaurant of Andoni Luis Aduriz, the superstar Spanish chef who is also LeDomaine’s Gastronomy Manager. Chef Montero’s culinary creations at Refectorio fuse creative, contemporary twists on tradition with the wealth of high-quality, locally grown ingredients. His dishes are impeccably matched with wines of the Abadia Retuerta estate, home to some of the region’s finest.

Dating from 1146 and set within a 1,730-acre medieval estate, LeDomaine is an historic abbey that was brought into the 21st century with a sensitively and imaginatively implemented restoration – earning the property a Europa.

Nostra Award from the European Union for conserving cultural heritage. When the property opened March 22, 2012, it arrived on the Spanish tourism scene offering several firsts including becoming the country’s first hotel to offer a complete butler service and the first Spanish establishment to be included in the prestigious Relais Chateaux guide. In August 2014, LeDomaine became the first hotel in Europe to offer guests the hottest new technology, Google Glass.

Imbued with the charm and lore of a by-gone age, Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine takes guests back in time while immersing them in the comforts and luxuries of today’s most savvy hospitality. The medieval abbey and estate of LeDomaine is a grand travel experience that overwhelms the senses with its enduring history, stately architecture, majestic ambiance, world-class culinary experiences by one of Spain’s most celebrated chefs, acclaimed vineyards and 22 regal accommodations. The new rooms under construction will bring the total to 30 rooms and suites in summer 2015.

Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine opened in 2012 after a complete restoration that sensitively and imaginatively brought the property into the 21st century – and earned it a Europa Nostra Award from the European Union for conserving cultural heritage. Newly opened LeDomaine was the first hotel in Spain to offer a full butler service and the only Spanish establishment included in the 2013 edition of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux hotel and restaurant guide.

Almost a thousand years ago, the monks that inhabited Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine would gather around the refectory table to share the meager repasts that symbolized monastic life, while they listened to chants of the monk whose task was to turn the act of eating into an exercise in spirituality. Today the setting remains unchanged, but it now houses the Refectorio, an exclusive, Michelin Star restaurant where history and gastronomy blend together to uplift and enrich the spirit. A 17th-century frieze depicting the Last Supper presides over this imposing space.  Besides Refectorio, guests enjoy the tapas and small plates served at the hotel’s Vinoteca wine cellar and the light, fresh cuisine served at Jardin del Claustro, the hotel’s summer restaurant.

Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine has been a winery for nearly a millennium, but when it became a world-class estate hotel in 2012 it evolved into a gastronomy and wine tourism destination. Located in the heart of the Duero, one of Spain’s leading wine areas, the medieval abbey estate is recognized for its award-winning single terroir wines. More than 500 acres of the estate are allocated to the vine, covering hillsides ranging as high as 2,800 feet before sloping down to the southern bank of the Duero River. There are 54 vine plots, or terroirs, that have very distinct characteristics, each analyzed, controlled, worked, vinified and tasted separately. It is also one of the most advanced wineries in Europe combining ancient wine-making traditions with cutting edge technology.
