trivago unveils plans for new global campus

With less than $1m. as an initial investment, trivago has organically grown over the past nine years to nearly $500m. (2015) turnover and more than $4B (2015) in market place revenue. Still growing by more than 58% YoY, the team at trivago sees moving into a new campus not only as a necessity, but as just the beginning.

DUSSELDORF – trivago’s current headquarters in Dusseldorf, Germany are getting a bit tight, to say the least. With 222% growth since 2012, the multinational team of 950 needs room to grow, which is why trivago has commissioned a new state-of-the-art campus it plans to relocate to in 2018.

“We thought about moving people into the basement, but decided that building a campus might be a slightly better idea” says Founder and Managing Director, Rolf Schromgens.

With less than $1m. as an initial investment, trivago has organically grown over the past nine years to nearly $500m. (2015) turnover and more than $4b. (2015) in market place revenue. Still growing by more than 58% YoY, the team at trivago sees moving into a new campus not only as a necessity, but as just the beginning.

A few of the details
The six-storey, high-rise building (to accommodate 2,000 people) has been designed by SOP Architekten in Dusseldorf and will offer 26,000 m² (280,000 ft2) of open, accessible space – with room to expand by an additional 1,500 people to a 16-storey building next door.

As with the current headquarters, the new campus will include creatively-themed rooms and kitchens, and will continue to offer trivago-sponsored activities – from Bouldering to Krav Maga and Aerial Yoga. The health-conscious working atmosphere will also remain, with organic fruit and healthy lunches still being offered at no cost to employees, as well as ergonomic chairs, standing desks and access to fitness facilities and daily classes. Additionally, the team will have access to local parks, a green rooftop and expansive dining areas.

“Our goal is to attract the best talent from all over the world. With 63 nationalities all sitting in one office, making sure everyone feels comfortable and at home is really important,” says Sydney Burdick, trivago Global Corporate Communication.

This is why trivago names meeting rooms after individual’s hometowns, offers monthly team events and creates many opportunities in and outside of the office to get to know one another.

“Creating a nice office is not enough in itself. We want our new campus to be a reflection of our culture and our values, which we see as the main drivers behind our success. Many people are puzzled when they realize that we have nearly our entire global team sitting in one place; but by bringing everyone together, we have seen that co-working and collaborating on a daily basis is fundamental to building mutual trust. It enforces an exchange of information, accelerates action being taken and speeds up learning,” adds Burdick.

The new campus will sit on the docks of Kesselstrasse in the Dusseldorf Media Harbour. It will be easily accessible by tram and by bike, (which is important, as less than 10% of trivago teammates are travelling to work by car) and close to the famous ‘Neuer Zollhof’ buildings, designed by Frank Gehry. Dusseldorf, which came in sixth in the world on Mercer Consultancy’s Quality of Living Rankings in 2015, is home to some of the top local restaurants, galleries and businesses.
