Had a bad day? Log off and check into your business trip

The Egencia study examined the entire process of business travel, from arranging the trip, through to experiences during the visit, and how people manage the various phases of travel. Interestingly, 37 per cent of people claimed to feel more sociable than usual on their trip, and 38 per cent are able to think more creatively.

LONDON, UK – Egencia, the business travel company of the Expedia Group, announces the results of its second annual Egencia Business and Travel Technology Study, which reveals that 69 per cent of business travellers find business trips more enjoyable than everyday working life. A similar majority feel it’s important to enjoy the experience of business travel. The research adds further evidence to the suspicion that many find business trips to be an uplifting experience, and a chance to break free from the shackles of the day job.

So, does a work trip unlock a better you?

The Egencia study examined the entire process of business travel, from arranging the trip, through to experiences during the visit, and how people manage the various phases of travel. Interestingly, 37 per cent of people claimed to feel more sociable than usual on their trip, and 38 per cent are able to think more creatively. These feelings outranked worrying about a backlog at work or, surprisingly, missing the family. The old adage that change is as good as a rest would seem to apply to many business travellers as they contemplate their working lives in 2016.

Notable findings include:

  • 37 per cent of people claimed to feel more sociable than usual on their trip, while 38 per cent are able to think more creatively
  • 69 per cent of business travellers make their own arrangements globally (67 per cent here in the UK) to get the most out of their trip
  • 55 per cent delegate travel booking to save time, whilst 62 per cent of self-bookers do it for greater control
  • 42 per cent of business travellers find the experience more stressful than the day job at least once on their trip
  • 45 per cent of business travellers around the globe find arranging ground transportation the most frustrating part of booking their own travel
  • 43 per cent report feeling tired when they finish their trip, whilst 28 per cent feel relieved just to be headed home.

To get the most out of their trip, 69 per cent of business travellers make their own arrangements globally (67 per cent here in the UK) mostly out of choice. In fact only one-fifth do so because there is nobody else to do it for them, and only one-fifth say they would ‘always’ delegate booking their business travel if they could.

The biggest motivator for delegating travel booking would be to save time (55 per cent) whilst most self-bookers want to do it themselves for greater control (62 per cent).

But there is downside, during and after the trip.

Despite the clear majority enjoying their business trips, and preferring to book it themselves, it can come at a price – frustration.  Half of those interviewed struggle with the process of altering their bookings when plans change.

Once on their trip, 42 per cent find the experience more stressful than the day job.  For 45 per cent of business travellers around the globe, arranging ground transportation is the most frustrating part of booking their own travel. Often unaware of other options, 70 per cent of travellers head for the taxi line as the easiest way to find their way round an unfamiliar city.

When they finish their trip, 43 per cent report feeling tired with 28 per cent just feeling relief to be headed home.

“We’re finding that business travel is something most of us look forward to,” says Christophe Peymirat, Senior Vice President, Egencia EMEA. “Sure it’s tiring, but it can also be exhilarating. At Egencia we strive to develop technology for the traveller regardless of whether they are booking the trip themselves, or if they have help. Technology makes us more connected than ever. Egencia believes really smart technology can give the traveller control, reducing stress levels and helping them enjoy their work trips even more.”

The study was conducted across 12 markets in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific and solicited input from 6,072 international business travellers who travelled at least twice in the past year. It was commissioned by Egencia and conducted by Northstar.
