Tripping.com is releasing new data, focused on travel trends and consumer behavior

5% of people surveyed said they would be willing to forgo paying their mortgage to go on vacation, a 20% increase from 2015.

A recent survey indicates 41% of working Americans didn’t take a single day of vacation in 2015. This begs the question, is there something they would be willing to give up to go on vacation? Tripping.com sought out to find an answer by polling Americans for the second year, and the answers are quite compelling:

  • Leave your mortgage behind: 5% of people surveyed said they would be willing to forgo paying their mortgage to go on vacation, a 20% increase from 2015.
  • Say goodbye to vices: Over 41% of those surveyed would give up cigarettes and coffee for six months to go on vacation, a 7% increase from 2015.
  • Forego the latest tech: Almost a third of consumers surveyed (27%) said they would be willing to downgrade their smartphone or computer to go on vacation, a response that decreased 3% from 2015.

Of those who did take vacation days in 2015, Tripping.com found that 47% stayed in a vacation or short-term rental properties. When asked about their favorite experiences:

  • Meet new people: Over 52% of people who stayed at a vacation rental in the last year had positive interactions with their neighbors.
  • Support local economies – Eat. Shop. Repeat.: A whopping 90% of vacationers enjoyed eating at a local restaurant, while an additional 85% relished in local shopping near their vacation rental.
