Creative Director Matthew Rolston and sbe Hotel Group debut first look at The Redbury New York

Phase One of hotel transformation reaches completion with official launch of The Redbury New York.

NEW YORK – sbe, the Los Angeles-based leading lifestyle hospitality company that develops manages and operates award-winning hospitality venues, in collaboration with creative director and acclaimed photographer, Matthew Rolston, announce the completion of the first design phase of The Martha Washington Hotel‘s transformation to debut The Redbury New York. Beginning this week, The Redbury New York is officially open to guests for an immersive boutique hotel experience.

For the third and latest evolution of this music-centric hospitality brand, Rolston, the brand’s creative director, dove deep into New York City’s illustrious history as one of the birthplaces of some of the most influential American pop music and rock ‘n roll. The Redbury New York, located on 29th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, is adjacent to New York’s legendary center of music recording and publication, known as ‘Tin Pan Alley,’ where the American music industry flourished during the first decades of the 20th century.  The building’s iconic façade and designated historic landmark status reinforce The Redbury New York’s timeless design, which effortlessly transports guests to another era of New York’s history.

Rolston’s design inspiration captures the bold colors and vibrant music culture of Tin Pan Alley, utilizing vintage music imagery, gramophones, historic photography of New York City in the early- to mid-20th century, 1960s-era patterns and motifs (such as paisley wallpapers and oriental rugs), and many more atmospheric touches as visual accents throughout the property. The décor pays homage to the Bohemian inspiration behind The Redbury’s original flagship location in Hollywood, California. The Redbury New York captures the history of the surrounding New York neighborhood in the emerging NoMad district with music-centric style, richly evocative imagery, and a pleasingly funky sensibility.

Rolston has once again partnered with the design team behind The Redbury Hollywood and The Redbury South Beach, working closely with Dakota Development and Avenue Interior Design to bring this new property to life.

Setting a new benchmark for hospitality in New York City, The Redbury New York introduces an evolution of the boutique hotel experience with the debut of the largest Redbury property to date, featuring 256 guest rooms, creative meeting spaces featuring Juliet balconies and extravagant windows, relaxation areas, Ciel Spa bath amenities, Wi-Fi, and in-room dining from buzzy on-site restaurant Marta, hosted by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group.

The Redbury New York draws upon the brand’s original design philosophy, blending a playful and soulful approach that appeals to the creative side and pays tribute to the worlds of arts, music, fashion and media. The rooms feature specially curated photography and artwork, Bohemian-inspired and colorful accents, luxuriously soft linens – and the property’s friendly staff goes out of its way to make guests feel welcome – all of which contribute to the ‘at home-like’ environment that’s become synonymous with the brand.

“I was inspired by the rich cultural history that this area of New York represents,” said Rolston. “Guests will step into a design filled with visual eclecticism, the feeling of soulful American pop music, and a warm and welcoming ambience. Even though my work is extremely diverse, the unifying factors in my hospitality projects have always been a strong sense of place and a special feeling of romance. I want guests to feel both stimulated and relaxed at the same time. That’s something we all crave, especially residents of and visitors to New York.”

Originally envisioned by sbe founder and CEO Sam Nazarian and Rolston, The Redbury brand launched in 2010 in Los Angeles as a new hospitality category for sbe with a boutique design inspired by 1960s-era Bohemian counterculture, carefully chosen hospitality amenities, and a soulful and engaging environment that is sophisticated, yet comfortable and inviting. This hospitality experience features Rolston’s highly-designed and richly-atmospheric aesthetic, and has been awarded top recognition on Travel & Leisure’s IT List, Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List and USA Today’s Top 10 List & Hippest Hotel in LA.

Added Nazarian, “Since we first conceived The Redbury brand, Matthew Rolston and I worked closely together to craft a sensory and immersive experience, allowing guests to feel at home in a theatrical and expressive environment. Matthew once again delivered a design direction that perfectly reflects the bustling artistic community in the NoMad area and reflects our original vision for The Redbury.”

Assuming the role of creative director, Rolston, widely recognized as one of the leading Hollywood photographers and music video directors of his generation, has helped define the modern aesthetics of celebrity and beauty, having perfectly captured nearly every music, film and television star working today.

Through its membership with Preferred Hotels & Resorts Lifestyle collection, The Redbury New York receives a combination of strategic sales, marketing, distribution, and technology solutions. Travelers who visit the property are eligible to enroll in the iPrefer guest loyalty program, which extends points redeemable for free nights and other expenditures, elite status, and special benefits such as complimentary Internet upon every eligible stay at more than 550 participating properties worldwide.

The Redbury New York is located at 29 E. 29th Street, New York, NY 10016.
