Denver Int'l Airport takes part in pilot program to compost organic materials
Restaurants in Denver International Airport’s Jeppesen Terminal, together with employees in the terminal and the Airport Office Building, are taking part in a pilot program to test the feasibility of composting organic materials. The program is funded by a grant to DIA and the Denver Department of Public Works from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The Denver Department of Public Works began its residential-collection part of the composting program several months ago. DIA’s commercial-collection program began in late January and will continue for three months.

Janell Barrilleaux, director of environmental services at DIA, said the pilot program will involve collecting organic material from all restaurants and break rooms in the terminal and AOB, with the goal of turning it into reusable compost material. “This project will provide us with valuable information on the logistical issues, organics diversion, and economics of composting at the airport,” Barrilleaux said. “This information will help us determine the feasibility of making organics collection and composting a permanent program at DIA.” Tatiana Rokou - Wednesday, March 04, 2009
