Private Greek carriers plan flights to Cyprus
Four private Greek airlines promise cheaper fares from Greece to Cyprus in return for traffic rights. The carriers have applied to the Cypriot transport ministry for either regular or charter flight rights, or both.
The ministry said the monopoly that Cyprus Airways and Olympic<.> Airways have on flights between Cyprus and Greece will end this year, but before any final decisions take place it will have to confer with its Greek counterpart. Meetings are expected to take place between the two ministries sometime in September.
The four carriers - Aegean, Cronus, Air Greece and Axon - have applied for rights to flights from Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion (Crete).
At present, high fares from Greece to Cyprus make the island one of the most expensive destinations in the world per mile for Greek travelers.
